Are there any names that you just can't imagine on a baby?

Each to their own but I just can't picture a baby Frank. It seems such a harsh sounding adult name for a baby especially a newborn yet there have obviously been a lot of baby Franks but somehow I have a mental block when picturing it.

Does anyone else feel this way about a name?

It works the other way too-my friend has two aunties-aunt poppy and aunt Olivia
both lovely names but very popular now-both names wouldn’t have anyone batting an eyelid on a baby now-it’s just these (lovely) ladies are both pushing 100

my grandad, great aunts and uncle where Leonard, olive,Edna and wilf

olive and wilf have swung back-I’ve met loads of babies with those names-I was cuddling a baby olive just the other day-it would have been the height of uncool and old fashioned if I’d named either of my dds after her

leonard (not Lenny) and Edna haven’t

My aunts on my other side are Amanda (Mandy) cherry and Sheila

ive met more than one baby cherry but not Amanda/Mandy or Sheila

I just know that my great children may be named one of the ‘uncool’ names as that’s what happens-they swing out of fashion and the cool parents haven’t heard them on rl people so they become cool again

myself and my brothers have names that are timeless-we could be any age and they’ve not dropped in or out of name lists over the years

out of my own children, only three names could be thought of as timeless-the others are very of the time they where born and to my regret, they will be thought of the same as ‘lan,Trevor or Nigel’ of the day in time-and one was born,so I named him what I thought was classic, timeless and lovely-I’d never met another of his name at the time of naming him

It ended up with ten kids with the same name in his class all though school-there seemed to be a boom of that name at the time

I actually know a baby Frank and it suits him perfectly! I think once it’s a real baby and not a theoretical one, any name works.

This 100%

DS is named (middle name) after a late family member. It's one that frequently gets mentioned on these threads as being boring and "70's" and ugly. But to me it just represents all the things I love about my relative. It makes me think of kindness, warmth, strength, light. Names are so subjective. I think once you start to attach them to a real person they take on that character.

It's a shame that all those strong Scottish clan names - Malcolm, Allan, Russell, Douglas, Craig, etc - still have a strong residual 70s first-name feel about them, instead of being part of the current 'surname as first name' trend. Although I guess Mason/Tyler/Harrison/Morgan etc are heading that way already, but as typical 2010/2020s generation boys' names.

I gave DS the middle name Allan recently 😊 keeping the clan names alive 🤣

Keith.

My colleague has a son called Bruce also. Couldn't imagine that when told, but it works.

Agree with Nigel and Barry

Can't really imagine a baby Pamela or Kelly or Lorraine

All those names are currently unfashionable but they'll come back

Yes I bet this is true. They'll become the really old person names than then seem cool and vintage to new parents.

People like me who have kids now, will one day be meeting their new grandchild and thinking "Derek? Fucking DEREK?"

Grin

DS1 was named after a deceased family member who was very dear to DH. We got so many Hmm looks. More recently my mother admitted she was 'WTAF!!!!

(A cousin actually said to us with surprise; 'Oh! I thought you would name him something pretentious!'. (Which I was WTAF at myself)

It's a brilliant name and actually we now get loads of compliments. DS2 was named a top 5 never mind a top 10 and I am a bit regretful in some ways, although his nickname is a nice one.

A colleague recently named her baby Barbara. I have to say I was flabbergasted.

But tbf, a MN baby Margaret now would be 'christened Margaret, nn Gara/Argo/Pearl'.

There must once have been primary school classes full of little Terrys, Raymonds, Shirleys and Joyces. It's quite hard to imagine when names abruptly drop out of fashion after a particular generation, but I guess they'll be coming back in when they're 'we called him Roy Barry Arnold after his grandfathers' names.

I had a great Aunty Pearl her Sister my Gran was Margaret 😂

My dad is called Ian and we always say we don't know how his mother looked at a tiny baby and called him Ian.

But then again we say he was born an adult so it suits him 🤣.

cptartapp · 22/08/2022 12:51

Margo is extremely popular atm.

Malcolm.

Yes 🤣 a friend and I were discussing this recently! For me it’s FIONA 🙈

ThistleDoo · 22/08/2022 12:49

I wonder how the recent fashion for calling dogs and cats very slightly dated/ironic names will play out, in terms of how it affects baby names? I know a canine Frank, Ted, Dave, and Roger, and cats called Kevin and Pam.

SummerLobelia · 22/08/2022 12:48

Margaret is an odd one. The name Margot seems to be racing up the charts if our school with a nursery attached is anyhting to go by. I am not a fan of either but that is probably down to having a very difficult aunt names Margaret.
