Hello
I’m due a baby girl and have a short list but was wondering what would you assume the parents are like with children names like this:

Clara
Annie
Amelie
Cecilia
Flora
Camilla

thanks!

I have a Clara and despite MN always saying its over used ive never met another one. Theres no real nickname to it though she tends to get clara-lara or one of the many pet names we call her so if you want a name you can shorten then it doesnt fit your brief.

Florence - Flo
Henrietta - Hettie
Eleanor - Ellie
Penelope - Pen
Charlotte - Lottie

All seem to be more what fits

KirstenBlest · 29/08/2022 09:41

I know several Amelies. It's not used as much now and seems a bit past its peak and Amelia is so overused. It's too similar to the much nicer IMO Emily. Like Elodie and Genervieve, it is much nicer in a french accent

PMAmostofthetime · 29/08/2022 09:05

@Xenaaa Amelie is such a pretty underused name.

Thank you all for your help.

I’m looking for something classic that works for my child into old age, but with good nickname opportunities as a teen if they want to be “cool”.

but at the same time I don’t want something overused so I’ve stayed away from top 20.

I’m so surprised Amelie is overused as never met any, it’s just one of my favourite films.

we have a son named Rupert nicknamed Roo.

I’m looking for something similar that’s kind of vintage/granny chic/classic - but not too cool

which of my names on my list fits the bill? Thank you

In that case Annie or Flora fit the bill I think.

Louise0701 · 24/08/2022 23:00

Delilah
Lilia
Penny
Edith / Edie

Hi

thanks for all the messages, I’ve loved some of the suggested which I will put forward to DH.

I guess perhaps I am not as adventurous as I thought I was being. But I’m glad that the names have been well received.

I wouldn't think anything of the parents. Is that a thing?

And none of your names are hipster or 'adventurous'. They are fairly normal names..

anxiousatnight · 24/08/2022 06:21

I love your list OP but none of them make me think hipster or edgy - quite the opposite!

They make me think middle class but in a grounded and not pretentious way, especially Clara, Annie and Flora. Camilla and Cecelia are perhaps a bit more upper class but I like the names a lot. I think Amelie is a beautiful name and I actually don't know any, but agree that it will get swamped in the sea of Amelias.

I also like Celia as an alternative to Cecelia. I know a lovely grown up Celia and think it's a good balance between uncommon but not to out there. I also think it works well on a child and an adult.

I met a little Cordelia recently and I thought that was lovely.

Clara and Annie were on my list for girls, along with Pippa, Martha and Rosie. All boys here though so no chance to use them!

HappyHappyHermit · 24/08/2022 06:21

Phyllis would be my alternative suggestion.

HappyHappyHermit · 24/08/2022 06:20

I would say Clara is a horsey name. Camilla is okay but the Royal association is a bit much. Annie is very pretty and you don't hear it much, same goes for Judy. Flora, used to be nice but then you hear the silly 'spread' jokes and think that would be awful for a teenager. Amelie is also lovely but there are quite a few around.

MaryWM · 24/08/2022 06:12

What does it matter? It's not about you. Has it ever occurred to you how people picture your parents when they are introduced to you? Seriously, when you have children it's a good time to get out of the habit of thinking "but what will people think of me?".

LocalHobo · 24/08/2022 02:52

Phillipa? It has the L you like, and Pip and Roo sound perfect together!

Also like Annie and Judy, but with less potential for 'cool' nicknames.

Notcreativeatall · 24/08/2022 02:38

Some of the classic Late 60s/early 70s names may work
Caroline
Juliet
Judith
Elizabeth
Elinor
Catherine
Lucy/Lucinda

Rhaenys · 24/08/2022 01:47

Middle class from the south of England.

ReadtheReviews · 24/08/2022 00:20

Clara - bookish
Annie - aging hippies. Not sure why. Grin
Amelie - self conscious (trying to be more daring than Emily but not too daring)
Cecilia - unrealistic (expecting Cece to be in pink frills and doing baby ballet by 2).
Flora - friendly
Camilla - horsey

mathanxiety · 24/08/2022 00:10

Cecelia, Flora, and Camilla would go well with Rupert.

I think Rupert falls under the category of 'preppy' names, based on the sartorial choices of Rupert the Bear and his friends.

autienotnaughty · 23/08/2022 04:54

I like

Claudia
Evie
Cece

SequinsandStilettos · 23/08/2022 03:50

Cecilia <gavel> can always nickname to Cece when a teen.

Mummytobe333 · 23/08/2022 02:45

I would say older parents maybe late 30s

Thefruitbatdancer · 22/08/2022 22:45

My alternatives to your choices:
Clara - Clarissa
Annie - Anna
Amelie - Azalea or Adeline
Cecilia - Cecily
Flora - Florence
Camilla - Camellia

How many young girls named Judy do you know? I don’t know any and I think the name has bags of sass and retro appeal

The youngest Judy I know is in her mid 20s, but even so it just sounds like a normal name to me. I wouldn't think 'wow, baby Judy how unusual'. It sounds like a plain and sensible name, not one that requires bravery. We're not talking Boudica.

BadGranny · 22/08/2022 22:29

I do some stuff in a home counties boarding school. Every one of those names is represented by at least one student between 11 and 18 in the school. None of them are unusual in this context.

SizzlerFizzler · 22/08/2022 22:23

Does Judy require bravery? Seems such a normal and inoffensive name. Nothing there to scare the horses.
