Thoughts on Khushi for a girl?

Khushi means happiness in Hindi! Love the meaning, I’m not so sure what non-Hindi speakers will make of the sound? Opinions?
pronounced Kh-u-shee (u is like the “oo” sound in Whoosh).

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts, it’s been so helpful! We are going back to our list to choose something different, I just don’t think it works internationally for all the reasons mentioned on this thread.

I really want to love this name but I immediately thought of a vulva I'm afraid. Vulvas are nice though 🤷🏼‍♀️

SeanChailleach · 21/08/2022 17:58

Used to know a Khushbinder who went by Khush most of the time. Last seen working for a prestigious European organisation in Strasbourg.

Lots of words are slang for private parts. There's no point worrying.

EkinWho · 21/08/2022 15:41

It's a lovely name. And an excellent Indian restaurant in Edinburgh so I hope you are not north of the border.

orangeisthenewpuce · 21/08/2022 15:23

I immediately thought cushy meaning easy. Sorry.

Kushi in one european language means "woman's hairy vulva". PLEASE do not call your child this name if you think they might ever want to travel to mainland europe!!

Omg!

Kanaloa · 21/08/2022 14:56

Agree with others that while it’s a lovely Hindi name it simply doesn’t work internationally (for me anyway!) I always think you need to consider your child and how their life will be. There are so many pretty Hindi names that it seems a shame to pick one that has all these bad connotations in Europe, where the child will presumably live most of their life.

PhotoDad · 21/08/2022 14:51

Several girls named Khushi and a couple of boys called Khush at the school where I teach. I didn't know any of the slang references!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/08/2022 14:49

Are you yourself Hindu or have an Indian background? If it was just a random name plucked from another language that wouldn't be great.

badbaduncle · 21/08/2022 14:47

I wouldn't but it my community Kush is strong cannabis

I wonder if this is where coochie/cooch comes from.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/08/2022 14:44

Nah. For all of the reasons above

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2022 13:55

I thought of Cushty though in the DelBoy context.

Its a pity as it is pretty

SommerTen · 21/08/2022 13:53

Sounds like the Romany word Cushty as in 'all Cushty mate'.

DotDotDotDotDot · 21/08/2022 13:50

Yes back to the drawing board I think op. I’m sure there’s lots of other lovely Indian girls names that could work.
I actually thought of cushty - Del Boy style!

Evasmissingletter · 21/08/2022 12:45

It’s lovely but ….also slang for a vagina … sorry

Yeah this was my first thought too, sorry.

@IceCreamTime19 I had no idea!! So important to ask on here, I’m glad you mentioned this.
It’s a very popular contemporary name in India & I always loved the beautiful meaning but obviously it needs to work internationally.
