I love the name Elias and we are set on this. I pronounce it El-lie-us. I quite like the shortening Eli, rather than El, but wondered if that would mean I’d need to pronounce Elias Ee-lie-us? I’m not against this pronounciation it just doesn’t feel right in my head yet as I’m used to the other?

Why would I do that? What’s wrong with shortening a name?

Just give him a name that doesn't need shortening. Lias would be the obvious short version

justthinkingagain · 21/08/2022 16:35

Really? I’ve only ever heard it pronounced with the ‘lie’ sound!

Elias is definitely Eh lee as. Well, all those I've met said it that way.

Mammyloveswine · 21/08/2022 14:28

I thought it was pronounced Ee/lee/as but I think Eli is a nice nickname!

I have an Elijah but he goes by Eli-very common where I live at the minute though!

Eh-lie-Us is how it’s said, it’s a variation of Elijah, so you pronounce the short form
Eli Ee-lie just like you would for Elijah.

I think the person saying that sounds feminine thinks you mean you’d pronounce it El-Lee like the girls diminutive of Eleanor.

I don't see a problem with your pronunciation and the NN Eli go for it

pinklavenders · 21/08/2022 10:33

Elias normally shortens to El. I find Eli/Elli very feminine sounding

PritiPatelsMaker · 21/08/2022 10:20

I like the name and the shortening Wink

NancyJoan · 21/08/2022 08:58

Eli is lovely shortening, and your pronunciation is the only way that anyone will ever say it. Go for it!

justthinkingagain · 21/08/2022 08:56

Actually I think I pronounce it more like “Uh-lie-us” at the moment which is different again 😂
