What do you think? For a girl.

Ok, point taken 😀. It's not actually for my kid, a pregnant friend has mentioned it as an option. I'm trying to persuade her down the Elizabeth shortened to Libby route, as that is another option. Not sure where Shayla has come from.

I am sorry I don't think it sounds very classy at all. A bit like Shania.

emmathedilemma · 15/08/2022 12:30

TwinklingFairyLightz · 15/08/2022 09:47

Me too!

mogwa · 14/08/2022 21:12

"Shayla" is how Spanish people pronounce Sheila.
It wouldn't be my choice but I think it sounds fine.

xJoyfulCalmWisdomx · 14/08/2022 21:11

I like it! It sounds like it should be a name it's a cross between kayla and sheila

DramaAlpaca · 14/08/2022 21:07

BorisJohnsonsHair · 14/08/2022 20:51

It's a Blondie song!

Oh yes, it is! I'd forgotten that.

OP, it's OK as a name. I quite like it actually.

How do you mean?

Her baby name was Charla, bizarrely.

I know a Sheila who says it Shayla, I think she thinks it makes it sound posher.

I don’t like it OP sorry, its sounds made up and low rent, a bit Aussie barmaid c 1982

How about Sacha or Stella or Sara?

BorisJohnsonsHair · 14/08/2022 20:51

It's a Blondie song!

I think of it as a type of head cover rather than a name

Didn't know it was a type of head cover too.

My first thought was Charlotte from SATC too

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 14/08/2022 20:00

Yep, Charlotte and the stolen baby name episode immediately comes to mind for me too.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 14/08/2022 19:57

Sounds like the Australian pronunciation of Sheila

Luxa · 14/08/2022 19:55

Hayla, hayla shayla. Ging gang goolie goolie goolie goolie watcha, ging gang goo, ging gang goo. Hayla, hayla shayla

Yes, my first thought too Grin

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 14/08/2022 19:54

Don't like Shayla but Shyla is nice

Exactly this! 😂

I can’t unhear Sheila now it’s been pointed out though. It sounds made up, and while I know every name was made up once etc etc this one isn’t my cup of tea.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/08/2022 19:44

No.

How do you mean?

There’s an episode of Sex and the City where they go to a friend’s baby shower and Charlotte gets upset when she learns that the baby is to be called Shayla. She maintains that she made the name up in school, her friend knew this, and stole it from her.

It’s the only time I’ve heard of Shayla so, if I heard it, I’d instantly think that the baby was named by a SATC fan.

FuckingHateRats · 14/08/2022 19:34

I currently teach a Shayla. As far as names I hear in school, it's definitely one of the less weird / made up.

Cannot unhear the Australian 'Sheila' though, and will now always think of this when I say her name!
