A bit of alliteration never killed anyone and it'll simply be her name once people have met her

Sockwomble · 19/08/2022 12:16

Personally I would have Nell on the birth certificate and call her Nellie as her nickname. I don't think those 'ella' names work any better with your surname.

J3110 · 19/08/2022 10:44

J3110 · 19/08/2022 10:37

Thank you.. my partners suggested Noella nn Nellie but then it's still the alliteration. Not sure if it's going to be the same issue x

I also don't see how we can use Noella and have Nellie as a nickname. We just can't agree on any formal names. I don't really think annelise goes with my other children's names. I like Anneli but my partner doesn't he thinks it's harder to say Anneli with the surname than it is Nellie. I have an aunt called Pennelope/Penny and don't really wanna name the baby after her as we don't get along. I don't like Cornelia or Petronella.

I like Nellie, Nell, Nella but just wish I thought of it being a problem with the surname beforehand. I felt connected to the name Nellie during the pregnancy especially after knowing the meaning and then once she was born and I was in this little bubble at the hospital it just suited her so much and she is now my little Nellie. It was only when writing the name and coming online that I actually thought of the alliteration x

Nellie is lovely!!!! But I probably wouldn't put it with your surname as her full given name. I'd go with Annaliese or one of the other lovely suggestions on this thread. Yes, people might call her Annie, but if you just introduce her to people as Nellie from the off then that will be what she's called day-to-day. But it also gives her the option to use the longer version at work etc if she wants.

If you always call a kid a shortening, that becomes their name. My DS is Ted, short for Edward, and has no idea that his name is actually Edward 😆

Harper Wren. Not Nellie as a first name I think. I also think there are too many middle name Graces. I know of four (aged 10, 8, 6 and 3)

Jemimapinotduck · 17/08/2022 00:29

I love the name Nellie but I personally couldn't use it as a first name with your surname. I love Grace, it's my eldest daughters middle name and have never had any negative comments. I would probably go with Lila Nellie grace N

2ndTimeRound90 · 13/08/2022 22:57

The spelling of Nelly makes me think of the male rapper! Probably an age thing. Nellie is nicer in my opinion.

It's not generally negative to have a name from a nursery rhyme but it's because it's about an elephant in this case then it could easily be used to mock an overweight person (or someone who is not overweight but could be bullied into thinking so)

Harper Wren - sounds like a US attorney firm

Harper Nellie - sounds like the name of a cockney hooker being read in the magistrate court "Harper, Nellie - please take the stand"

Grace is so common as a middle name. There are much more interesting names.

Lilah/Lylah is nice.

Hooker?! Really! As if anyone is going to think of a hooker when being introduced to a child just because of their name.

As I said Grace is after my partners Nan so that will be used regardless of how common it is as a middle name

Use whatever is your formal preference on the BC but use and introduce her as Nellie. My youngest is always called by the shortened version of her name which like yours is alliterative with her surname. Most people don’t know she has a long form but she can use it if she likes.

I posted on the last thread and I’m going to say it again. Name her Nellie!!! Although, I am preferring the spelling Nelly. It is a lovely name.

Partner also prefers the spelling Nelly.. thank you 😊

Billie who?? Literally never heard that name. I suppose it is a generational thing and younger people may say that just as I've never heard of Billie whatsit, so they've never heard of Nellie the elephant. That may be true, but I'd worry that as a sort of classic children's song it may come back to prominence one day, with a re-release or something. That's why people are suggesting a longer name, with Nellie as the nickname. Not to be unkind to the OP! But because it might possibly cause the girl embarrassment in the future. Just Nell for example I find beautiful.

Even if there were no elephant song, Nellie is a little childish as the full name imo. In the same way as Susie, Katie, Tommy, Charlie etc
Give the child a full name use the cute diminutive whilst they're a child! I'm aware that most people 'don't seem to think along those lines though, hence the recent spate of Alfies, Maisys, Archies etc.

BTW who is that Billie?
I

Billie is from a reality TV show. I completely agree with what you are saying although I'm unsure if it's really such a negative having a name in a nursery rhyme, same as polly put the kettle on, Leo the lion etc. I am considering Nell on birth certificate and Nellie is what I will call her unless she decided she didn't like that as she was growing up. Also Annelie is also a possibility atm but she will always be my Nellie either way. It has a lot of meaning to us x

I don't think there is anything wrong with the name Nellie. It is combining it with the surname that is the problem. So I think having it as the nickname of another name, having Nell on the birth certificate or having it as a middle name ( although it wouldn't actually be used then) are better options.

I had my heart set on using Nellie somehow as it has a lot of meaning to me. I'm considering Harper Nellie but also considering a formal version for Nellie so I can still call her Nellie but the only ones I don't particularly hate are Anneleise and Anneli but then ky partner said she would probably be named Anna/Annie

Don’t listen to them OP I love Nellie! It’s the name of billie faiers daughter. And I think the elephant reference is long gone.

Rosecottage888 · 13/08/2022 00:47

Harper Wren ❤️

DuchessOfSausage · 13/08/2022 00:27

Anneliese will be misspelt a lot.
I think you can register a baby without a name and add it later, but check if that's right.
Zoe Ball has a Nelly and there's Nelly Furtado and Nell McAndrew.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/08/2022 00:04

Aw sorry you are struggling OP- it's horrible having these extra stresses post-partum (I went through the same thing after I had my DS, who also has an alliterative name so it wouldn't be everyone's choice, despite his first name being a much more popular name than Nellie).

IMO you have 3 choices - go with your current fave (Nellie Grace N). Go with a semi- compromise - Anneliese Grace N (but introduce her as "Nellie" to everyone from day 1 so it's very unlikely people will ever call her anything else, unless she herself insists she prefers Anna/Anneliese when older). Or go with you and your partners original first name choice - Harper Nellie N sounds fine to me and that way you still get Nellie in the name.

I'd probably go for option 2 as you kind of get it all then - a less common and elegant, international first name (Anneliese - I knew a lovely German one at school) , but with a cute day to day nn (Nellie), no alliteration concern and a middle name that has meaning to you (Grace).

Good Luck! And at the end of the day, I think you could be right - most kids probably won't think of the elephant (that will be more parents/grandparents imo). Equally I think kids don't seem bothered by or even seem to like alliterative names - as it's very superhero (Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Lois Lane etc).

Mittens1717 · 12/08/2022 23:00

I would go with my gut and name her Nellie as you obviously love it so much, Nellie Nevitt sounds perfectly fine to me

Mumofgirls2017 · 12/08/2022 22:34

Harper Wren!

resm · 12/08/2022 21:33

I think if you love the name Nellie as does your partner, you should just go for it. It’s your 3rd daughter I understand so you may regret never using a name you clearly hold dear. Nell is a pretty cool name that she could use if it turns out she doesn’t like Nellie herself.

I know an 18yo Nellie. She's gorgeous and super cool. Her name really suits her.

I like Harper Wren as well.

Thank you thats good to hear. It's more the alliteration with the surname that seems to be an issue in this case. I love the Name
