Georgiana pronunciation

How would you pronounce Georgiana? And where are you located? We are in NW England. I would say Jor-Jaynah but DH says Jor-Jee-Arnah. I like both pronunciations but would prefer to use the ‘correct’ one. This is only for a middle name so not the end of the world if people mispronounce. So how would you say it?

Jor-Jee-Arnah
Jor-Jee-Anna
Jor-Jaynah

Something else entirely?

Thanks!

it wouldn’t occur to me to pronounce it Jor-Jay-Na. The letters aren’t there for it to make that sound. But I loathe Jane Austen and I’ve no idea who this Duchess is that everyone is talking about, so that may be why I’ve never come across it. And I’m afraid my immature brain keeps wanting to turn that pronunciation into Jor-Jaynus… sorry…

I'd either say Jor-Jee-Ah-Nah (equal emphasis on all syllables) or more likely Jor-JAHH-Nuh with the middle two syllables run into one and stressed.

I’m south east England, with a non-rhotic accent, but for some reason I’ve always pronounced bath, castle, grass etc with a short a rather than the long a (bath rather than bahhhth, etc).

Georgina is nicer.

Op, can you explain where you see the 'ay' sound? It's not 'ai' it's 'ia' - in other words ;eeyah'

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 14:31

Arnah

Why add the R?!

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2022 14:31

Also Lana, Juliana, Ariana

lunar1 · 11/08/2022 14:30

I'm in the NW and dyslexic, I'd completely avoid saying it until I'd heard someone else say the name.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2022 14:28

Jor-Jee-Arnah
SE
I know a Liliana who prounces the end Arnah

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 14:27

There's no R in -iana either

ILoveYoga · 11/08/2022 14:24

KirstenBlest · 11/08/2022 14:17

@SemperIdem , nobody explained the Car-sell bit
I can just about get Car-sul but not Car-sell.
Can you explain it please.

GCAcademic · 11/08/2022 14:04

Jor-Jaynah

maranella · 11/08/2022 14:03

Is that right @Luredbyapomegranate? I've seen the film starring Keira Knightley and never actually met anyone called Georgiana, so assumed that was the right pronunciation. I stand corrected!

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/08/2022 00:28

The Jor-jay-nah pronunciation was supposedly invented by the friends of the Duchess of Devonshire, and if you said it like that you were in her inner circle and if you didn’t you weren’t. Not sure if that’s true but some people do seem to think this is the ‘correct’ way of saying it.

Lurleene · 10/08/2022 23:19

It's Jorj - ee - ahna in Sanditon.

I'm still struggling to see how Castle can be pronounced Car Sell Confused ?!

Someone has already explained rhotic vs non-rhotic accents in this thread. Scroll up! 🙄

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 10/08/2022 20:15

As opposed to Rick “never gonna give you up” castle?? 🤷‍♀️

I'm still struggling to see how Castle can be pronounced Car Sell Confused ?!

BowiesJumper · 10/08/2022 18:11

Dear Jorge-ee-arna, how I long to see her :)

pitterypattery00 · 10/08/2022 17:55

I bet half the people on this thread crying over the 'R' sound being added say castle like CAR-SELL anyway.

What?! Why would those of us with accents that don't add a non-existent r pronounce castle as car-sell?? Makes no sense.

My partner has an accent that adds r sounds (e.g. sawring instead of sawing). He spells words wrongly on occasion as he actually thinks they have an r in then!

2pinkginsplease · 09/08/2022 09:13

Glasgow and I’d say :
jor-jay-Anna

I don’t get why people would put an r in the Anna part at the end, there isn’t even an r in the end part of the name.

Me too! (Also from Glasgow).

I really don't get the added r either.

SpiderVersed · 10/08/2022 17:10

Mr Darcy call his sister Jorj-ee-ah-na and that’s authoritative enough for me.

<slight swoon at the thought of Darcy>

FallOutPloy · 10/08/2022 17:04

But that would be George-EE-na?

PseudonymPolly · 10/08/2022 16:08

If you prefer the sound of Jor-Jaynah I'd just go with Georgina personally.

PseudonymPolly · 10/08/2022 16:06

Jor Jee Ahh Na

DuchessOfSausage · 10/08/2022 16:02

I say Cassull. If I saw CAR-SELL, I'd say Car Sell

pinklavenders · 10/08/2022 15:51

I bet half the people on this thread crying over the 'R' sound being added say castle like CAR-SELL anyway.

Who on earth says Castle like Carusel (without the u)?!Confused
