Indian name Ambali?

thoughts about this name for a south asian baby girl? I think it’s a lovely, warm sounding name, what comes to your mind?
pronounced Am-baa-lee (like Bali but with “am” at the beginning)

I don't like it to be honest, I've only ever heard of it used as a surname rather than a first name.

It's up to you but I don't like it. She will also get the mick taken out of in the playground. Also, Ambala Sweets. It's uncommon. It doesn't roll off thr tongue except if said with the correct pronounciation in Hindi so loses it's appeal imo for a kid whose gonna grow up in the UK.

If you found it online, just a warning - online naming sites are notoriously unreliable. When I was considering Indian names for our children, I found LOADS of gorgeous ones that all of my Indian family claimed they'd never heard of in their entire lives/swore weren't actual names.

Ambali is a vegetarian drink or porridge in South India. Ambala is a chain of Indian foods in the UK.

And it's pronounced Um-BAAL-ee, not Am-BAA-lee.

Have you considered Anjali, which is an actual girl's name? Pronounced Un-JA-lee.

It's a lovely name, though, and easy for an English-speaker to pronounce (assuming from the fact you're posting on MN that you live in the UK). As long as you don't regularly come across Kannada speakers you should be okay…

Sorry I misunderstood - Am-BAA-lee is how it’s said. I thought you were describing Am-ber-lee. In which case I think it’s OK but not lovely.

You might get people saying it Am-BAA-lee just from the spelling, but it shouldn’t be a huge deal to correct.
