What do you think of the Persian name Vashti?

Hi all! 👋
We are looking for a name that fits our cultural background (Persian/ Indian) and came across this lovely name. What are your thoughts? I know it has some biblical associations, we are not Christian though, more into new age & dharmic spirituality. Can we still use the name based on it’s Persian origin? Can it work in the UK & internationally?

To any of the Hindi/ Farsi speakers out there: does it have any negative associations in those languages?

Very pretty name 👍

JamSandwich89 · 02/08/2022 22:52

Honestly, my first thoughts were carpet cleaner or some sort of moustache bleaching kit 🤷😬 but if you love it, go for it! There's always someone who doesn't like a name 😅

Saisong · 02/08/2022 22:46

I think it's pretty. I knew one growing up many moons ago.

Cindie943811A · 02/08/2022 22:44

I like it ; feminine and with character and easy to pronounce!

BlueWhaleBay · 02/08/2022 22:07

Pretty. Didn’t realise it was uncommon as I have met quite a few.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 02/08/2022 22:02

I really like it. Very pretty name.

Meredusoleil · 02/08/2022 22:00

Sorry OP, but as a Persian speaker I would say there are far prettier girls' names out there. Even far prettier Indian names come to think of it!

pinksquash13 · 02/08/2022 21:52

I like it too. Very pretty.

bengalcat78 · 02/08/2022 21:45

@Ruthietuthie Will check the song out! :)

Very pretty.

I love the name Vashti, in part because of it reminds me of the lovely folk singer Vashti Bunyun. "Her "Just another diamond day" is the song I was listening to when my son was born.

bengalcat78 · 01/08/2022 15:39

@Danoo What do you not like about it? The sound, how it looks written down, the meaning…? Just curious!!

Staynow · 01/08/2022 14:44

Sorry OP I don't like it, it just makes me think vag.

Danoo · 01/08/2022 14:41

Awful. There must be something prettier than that.

SemperIdem · 01/08/2022 14:40

It’s a lovely name op

Dilbertian · 01/08/2022 14:38

The Book of Esther isn't in the Torah, it's a much later book. Only the most antediluvian, strictly orthodox, bible-basher would find bad connotations for Vashti.

IMO it's a lovely, pronounceable, unusual name. (I have a name that flummoxes most English-speakers - pronounceable makes life easier!)

Pinktruffle · 01/08/2022 14:32

@bengalcat78 I'm not hugely up on my Hindi as I'm Punjabi but it means lovely/beautiful according to the internet.

RamblingEclectic · 01/08/2022 14:28

Sounds lovely.

I don't think most in the UK will assume the name is from the Torah story from the Book of Esther where she's barely mentioned as part of the inciting incident.

Even if they do, opinions on that character are mostly favourable-to-neutral these days - some write Vashti as a feminist icon standing up to a tyrant & politically savvy and/or a victim of a wicked society and a drunk husband with too much power & ego. Some medieval writings added some nasty backstory, mostly to blame her for her husband being an ass and him getting rid of her, but I'd be wary of anyone sticking to that these days.

Mythril · 01/08/2022 14:20

I think it sounds nice. The only association I have is the folk singer Vashti Bunyon. I like her song Just Another Diamond Day.

bengalcat78 · 01/08/2022 14:13

Thank you everyone! Glad to hear good feedback. @Pinktruffle What is the meaning in Hindi/ Sanskrit? I can’t seem to find it online, the websites I’ve come across only show the Persian meaning.

I don't know any Vashtis but it sounds pretty, and looks nice written down.

CaptainCallisto · 01/08/2022 13:58

I've known two Vashtis and they were both absolutely lovely, so I've got nothing but good associations. Beautiful name.

GreenClock · 01/08/2022 13:58

I like it! It sounds strong.

Gaveitall · 01/08/2022 13:56

It’s a lovely name.
Go for it.
Lots of blessings to your dear little girl. ❤️

BlueChampagne · 01/08/2022 13:54

I love it. Knew a Vashti at Uni and would have used if I'd had girls.
