Keziah or Cassia?

Clairewentoverthemountain · 29/07/2022 17:30

Keziah is a Old Testament girl's name, which has the same meaning as Cassia, which has a Greek origin.

Which do you prefer?

Traditional nickname for Keziah is Kizzy, and Cassia Cassie.

Cassia sounds like the name of a company or product, or perhaps a tropical root vegetable (am I thinking of casova?)

Keziah is a nice feisty name, and an old name as well.

BloodyCamping · 01/08/2022 23:28

Cassia is beautiful

SE13Mummy · 01/08/2022 23:23

Keziah gets my vote. It was very nearly DD2's name as I've always loved the book, The Diddakoi.

Friffle · 31/07/2022 16:06

'poor man's cinnamon' made me lol

I'm imagining umbrage being taken in the spice drawer when cassia hears that!

LT2 · 31/07/2022 15:19

Cassia. I've thought about this for a future daughter.

Flaunch · 31/07/2022 15:18

Depends if you like Cassie or Kizzie more imo. I prefer Cassia but only because I went to a school with a Kizzie who was a bullying bitch so bad connotations.

@RockinHorseShit Take a look at the types of flowering plant in the Cassia genus, just because you think only of the bark part of the tree doesn’t make the name ‘muddy looking’, there is more to a plant than its bark. With that way of thinking no one should name their child Willow or any other tree name in case it conjures up images of the trunk.

RockinHorseShit · 31/07/2022 15:04

@JasmineAndSalt

The other herbal type names are pretty, floral plants, not muddy looking bits of old bark that is a poor man's cinnamon 🙄

JasmineAndSalt · 31/07/2022 14:26

I've met one Cassia and never met a Keziah, think you're safe on popularity. Both are nice. The nutmeg/cinnamon point above is silly, there are loads of edible plant names out there, and Cassia has other etymologies too.

I just feel like Cassia is an, at the moment, trendy name which will date easily and to me, appreciate this is subjective, is silly. Keziah doesn’t float my boat either.

What is that based on? Darkgreener names show that since 1996 it has been used a maximum of 33 times in one year, so it has not hit a peak to be able to 'date'. Can it be trendy if it's hardly being used?

I'm gobsmacked at the number preferring Cassia here. MN is usually quite hot on spotting daftness with name choices😐 I doubt any of you would think Nutmeg, Cloves, or Cinnamon was a good name choice 🥴

Staynow · 30/07/2022 18:48

Cassia is much prettier to me, Keziah is really harsh sounding.

Eixample · 30/07/2022 18:44

Cassia

Friffle · 30/07/2022 18:39

Kasia

Best of both.

NoKandoo · 30/07/2022 18:39

Definitely Cassia. Keziah (Kez) has a slight whiff of chavdom, despite its noble origins.

If I had another girl, I'd call her Zipporah.

DaffyDaffy · 30/07/2022 18:36

Cassia is so much prettier than Keziah for me.

I’m also going to nominate Cassidy for the running.

lulalulalula · 30/07/2022 18:26

Cassia is much nicer, a softer sound and the name of an entire genus of flowering plants, not just cinnamon. I also prefer the shortenings of Cass/Cassie to Kez/Kezi.

RockinHorseShit · 30/07/2022 16:02

Keziah by far. The one I know goes by Kezi

Cassia is a cheap cinnamon substitute to me 🥴

Just to say I think the thing about Cassandra is a bit double-standardy. There are heaps and heaps of names on here that people are always suggesting that are associated with tragic figures.Or even not very nice figures. Cassandra in Greek myth was doomed but she was also the one who saw the truth and she also stuck to her own truth no matter what happened. She was a victim of the society around her. She was an admirable figure if tragic. On the other hand there are many mythical female names that are not admirable people to use the names of. And many more routinely suggested here are tragic figures. People are always suggesting Ophelia and Persephone on here. Ophelia is very popular now. Yet somehow Cassandra - which has been in standard usage for hundreds of years and has many women who have been named this name - is a worse namesake? I don't get it.

DramaAlpaca · 30/07/2022 00:23

Keziah for me, but I prefer it spelled Kezia.

I'm not keen on Cassia.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/07/2022 23:48

Both lovely but Keziah is more likely to get misspelt imo (since Kezia is used too - its a bit of a Susanna/Susannah situation). Also Cassia has a nice triple etymology - biblical Keziah link, nature name of pretty flowering tree and also from Ancient Roman Cassius family. Difficult though - I slightly prefer nn Kizzy but the full version of Cassia!

Onceuponatimethen · 29/07/2022 21:50

Keziah was the feisty heroine in a Rumer Goden book wasn’t she? Lovely name

FlissyPaps · 29/07/2022 21:48

Cassia

Ive got “Cassian” on my list if I ever have a boy

Circleofshells · 29/07/2022 20:04

oh and I wouldn’t go for Cassandra, it’s a very pretty name but evokes the doomed Cassandra from Greek myth for me. I once knew a girl called Cassandra who was a bit of a Cassandra, she was often right about things going wrong- but no one listened. Nominative determinism is real!
