As a middle name for Ottilie? I have a 3 syllable surname.

I love the names Ottilie and Imogen. You have great taste
i wouldn't worry about a nickname flowing, you don't often use full name, it's much better to pick a middle name you like. Eve is lovely

Amdone123 · 28/07/2022 09:59

Imogen Eve is beautiful.
Classic, timeless.

abadgutfeeling · 28/07/2022 09:46

Love Imogen Eve 👌🏼

Sandysandwich · 28/07/2022 09:28

Imogen Eve is lovely, I think it flows well especially as you said you have a 3 syllable surname

blueskyeve · 28/07/2022 09:20

Thank you all for your opinions. Still unsure what to do. I still like Ottilie, but am really considering not using it. What about Imogen? Imogen Eve?

The Ottilie I know is shortened to Lottie by her most people and the Oaty by her brother.

Even of it doesnt quite flow with eve, I think it does with Evelyn, as long as you say it the Ehv, a, lyn way so the E of Otillie and the E of Evelyn are prounounced differently

Amdone123 · 28/07/2022 08:10

I love Eve. I had an Aunty Eve ( though pronounced Ev - the old way !), she was an amazing lady, so lovely connotations for me. She was Evelyn, of course.
Ottilie is too trendy for me ( like Aurelia, Arabella, etc )
If you and your dh love it though, you should have it.
I think Ottilie Eve is fine - you're not saying the names together anyway, and it's lovely to honour a family member.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/07/2022 07:59

Isn't Ottilie a town in West Yorkshire?

Cindie943811A · 28/07/2022 00:18

I’m sorry but I have to agree with the posters who feel Ottilie is an ugly sounding name. Shortened to Ott or Otz doesn’t improve it either.
Eve is lovely as is Eva. Or if you want a fancier version, Yvette.
Do come back and tell us what you finally decide on. Is baby due soon?

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/07/2022 23:08

I think it's that it's both fussy and faddy. It's not awful but it's shot right up in popularity and will probably shoot right down so it will date (and still sound fussy).

How about Verity Eve ?

Eve is lovely but way way way overused (to the moon and back) so not as a first name.

ladyinwaiting99 · 27/07/2022 09:22

I absolutely love the name Ottilie!!
I agree that Eve as a middle name doesn't flow too well but if it's a family name I don't think it matters particularly. How often do people say the first and middle names together anyway?

SummerRemembered · 27/07/2022 09:18

Not going to comment on Ottilie as you have your heart set on it. Eve is lovely and I don't really understand the need to make middle names flow, especially when honouring a family name. Ottilie Eve is a bit of a mouthful but how many times will it be said that way? A first and middle name is not usually used as an isolated combination so you have to think about your surname too (obviously don't post here). Ottilie Eve Oliphant would be difficult but Ottilie Eve Davis breaks up the recurring vowel sound, for example.

You could always consider an additional middle name to break up the sounds while still honouring Eve? Ottlie Jane Eve...?

But then I'm a traditionalist and a real stickler for using middle names to honour relatives.

Mischance · 27/07/2022 09:14

Ottilies get called Ottie. I am surprised that the name is suddenly becoming more popular - personally I think it is horrid!! Sorry ......

FayCarew · 27/07/2022 09:08

It sounds ok as a german name - they say it as Ott-elia (like Amelia)

What don't I like about it? Makes me think of Utterly and Ottery, the tt might disappear depending on accent, and it's a bit twee. I can imagine someone saying it as O'er-leh

Primatrying · 27/07/2022 08:56

Ottilie is popular, so lots of people like it. Don't be swayed by Mumsnet if you like it! My taste is totally different to the consensus here! Would be so boring if we all liked the same names!

The double E sound in Ottilie Eve makes it awkward, but I regret not using a meaningful middle name for dc because it didn't flow. It really really wouldn't have mattered. No one has been interested in the middle names since the birth announcement!

TipsyMipsy · 27/07/2022 08:17

DD's friend Ottilie has gained the nickname at university Ottilie Bottilie or Utterly Butterly because of how two of her housemates with very strong accents pronounce the name. It's ruined the name for me!

I would choose another one-syllable MN like Faith, Kate, Beth, June etc. Definitely not Eve.

I am another one who really doesn't like Ottilie. It makes me think of an otter in a frilly dress and bonnet!

I agree with this image! An otter in a nasty frilly dress! The Ott sound is harsh and unpleasant and the ilie ending is really twee and babyish. I just don't think it's a graceful or strong name for a girl/woman. Plus it's a bit of the time isn't it, it'll sound dated quickly.

ChagSameachDoreen · 26/07/2022 22:44

Eve Ottilie is better, if you must use Ottilie at all.

To me it sounds like a children's cartoon about otters - "Otterly".

MbatataOwl · 26/07/2022 21:19

How is Ottilie pronounced? To me it looks like it's pronounced 'Utterly' to me.

blueskyeve · 26/07/2022 21:10

Thanks to you all for confirming my suspicion Ottile Eve doesn't flow. I agree with you all, but want sure if it was just me over thinking.

Very interesting that most don't like the name Ottilie. I don't want strangers to dictate what name I choose, but to be honest I'm now having second thoughts! Such a hard decision to make. What is it about the name that you don't like?

I do like Eve as a first name the more I think about it. Unsure what to do!

Eve is lovely. Evelyn isn't.

Ottilie is horrible. Ottilie Eve doesn't flow and sounds clumsy with the ee-ee sounds.

Glitternails1 · 26/07/2022 06:44

Ottilie Eve does not flow. I also prefer Eve to Ottilie. I think Ottilie is quite popular nowadays. Evelyn/Evie are too, but Eve not so much.

grumpynamechange · 26/07/2022 06:32

It doesn't go with Ottilie. It all flows into one difficult to pronounce word, like Otterleeyeev. I don't much like Ottilie either, but think Eve beautiful, how about Eve Ottilie? That works. Otherwise if you love Ottilie and want Eve maybe just chuck another middle name in there. My kids all have two middle names. Like 'Ottilie Charlotte Eve' or something.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/07/2022 23:51

Eve is gorgeous- to be honest I much prefer it to Ottilie which is a quite trendy now imo. Eve's a simple, elegant classic, so I can never understand why it is so underused as a middle name option (when other one syllable middle names are so ubiquitous- Grace, May, Rose) - although I suppose I can perhaps understand why it's underused as a first name because similar Eva, Evie, Evelyn are so popular now they might make Eve feel over done too to some.
