Evelyn - Most common pronunciation

Would you say:

Eve-lin
Ehv-lin
Ev-uh-lin

I’m just curious as to which pronunciation is most popular. It’s one of those names that is nice but nobody ever seems to agree on how to say.

Hmmm I think perhaps best to consign this to the “lovely but will be pronounced differently by about 1 in 3 people” along with Esme and Clara.

That was the decision we made in the end. It had been on our short list for a while. My name gets variable pronunciation and as a kid I would sometimes find it uncomfortable correcting an adult (to be honest I still sometimes find it uncomfortable if it's said wrongly in a large meeting or something). I didn't want my DD to feel the same so picked something more straightforward (albeit with a couple of spelling variants but that's less annoying than pronunciation).

My Grandad used to call me Evelyn as a nickname, although it's nothing like my actual name. He pronounced it Ev-Lyn.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/07/2022 11:11

Ev-linn

I think everyone pronounces ever as evuh. Yet to hear eveurrr 😂

You're yet to hear me! Wink

pinklavenders · 23/07/2022 10:50

In my rhotic accent Ev-uh-lin and Ever-lin are different.

Same

Ever-lyn is the way I would pronounce it and it’s the best way to say it imo. I’ve also heard of Eve-lyn but Ever-Lyn seems to be the most common pronunciation, at least where I am.

Ever-lyn does sound the best I agree.

Ev Lyn

It's an old family name of which there's been a few. It has always been pronounced this way

Come to Scotland.

if there is an R in a word, we pronounce it.
and we don’t add in random Rs where there are none (eg draw-ring)

OP - I’d say Ev-lin

Felixsmama · 23/07/2022 09:47

My DD is called Evelyn we pronounce it Ev-uh-lin

I don't say evuh for ever, I say ev-urr (not eve-urr).
Those with rhotic accents (eg Irish, Scottish) pronounce the r.

I say it as Ev-uh-lin.

@bluegardenflowers
I think the problem is some people pronounce the letter r in ever, so that's why it can cause confusion when written like that. In my rhotic accent Ev-uh-lin and Ever-lin are different.

I don't think anyone is pretending@Belephant. If you have a rhotic accent it can be confusing the first time you come across the letter r written when it's not intended to be pronounced. I know I was confused when I first joined these threads.

Ever-Lyn

But there's no R..?!

It's written phonetically ! That's means it's spelt as you would say it, which is what op is asking for.

FWIW I would also say ever.lyn

whiteroseredrose · 22/07/2022 20:52

Eve Lyn

YetDespiteTheLookOnMyFace · 22/07/2022 20:47

I know three. All Ev uh lin. Two Evie for short with a long ee sound.

GiltEdges · 22/07/2022 20:41

Plexie · 22/07/2022 16:05

Isn't it supposed to be Eve-lin for a boy/man and Ehv-lin for a girl/woman? Or is it the other way round?

I only know one Evelyn who’s a boy and it’s pronounced Eve-lin.

Ev uh lin

Mind you, Ever-lin, Eva-lin and Ev Uh lin all sound the same to me

SpiderVersed · 22/07/2022 19:57

Eev-lin for male
Ev-uh-lin for female

BoredOfGrey22 · 22/07/2022 19:53

Ev-Lynn

LoisPlane · 22/07/2022 19:12

Ev-uh-lin

France98 · 22/07/2022 19:11

Ev-lin. I'm in Scotland and don't know anyone who has ever pronounced it differently. Maybe regional variations?

RuthW · 22/07/2022 19:10

Eve-lin for me

ParasiticMicrowasp · 22/07/2022 18:40

pinklavenders · 22/07/2022 16:02

Ever-Lyn

But there's no R..?!

And a pretty significant number of English speakers in the UK have non-rhotic accents and so don't pronounce the 'r' in 'ever'...
