We currently have a shortlist of names that are on the table and we are struggling to figure out which is our best option. Any advice would be lovely. Only one name (Elizabeth) has been taken off as DH doesn’t like the connection with the queen.

Madeleine,
Rose,
Eleanor,
Jade,
Victoria,
Roisin,
Valentina,
Louise.

Madeleine - I really like this but as recent posts have show pronunciation is a mindfield. I slightly prefer Madeline too

Rose - overdone, firstly as a middle name and now as a first name

Eleanor - I really like but prefer Eleanore also personally wouldn't use as although I like Ella and Nora I really dislike Ellie

Jade - sounds a bit dated and downmarket

Victoria - really like it. Think Tori is really cute for a small child

Roisin - lovely name. I know a lovely 16 year old Roisin

Valentina - but full on for me

Louise - like it, it's unusual these days. I also like Louisa

marblemad · 25/07/2022 04:25

Madeleine, not bad
Rose, not keen but not the worst
Eleanor, don't mind
Jade, No too common.
Victoria, No
Roisin, Not keen
Valentina, No
Louise. No again too common - luisa however isn't bad though

bubblegumfloss · 23/07/2022 09:56

I would most likely try get Madeleine’s nn to something like Len or Lena, but DH also likes Maddie. Personally with most of the names on our shortlist I wouldn’t shorten them but he would.

I like Victoria, Jade and Rose

SemperIdem · 22/07/2022 21:47

Madeleine - this is lovely but I dislike Maddie as the inevitable nickname
Rose - classic
Eleanor - really like it but prefer the Elinor speaking
Jade - feels dated to me
Victoria - nice but hate all the nicknames
Roisin - lovely.
Valentina - lovely but Val/Tina are not great nicknames
Louise - dated

YouSoundLovely · 22/07/2022 20:55

Madeleine - like this, very pretty
Rose - not keen, but I love Rosa
Eleanor - lovely and classic
Jade - dislike
Victoria - like, and very unusual these days
Roisin - like (think it's my favourite)
Valentina - hm, not sure - part of me likes it and part of me doesn't
Louise - like this a lot, though prefer Louisa

bubblegumfloss · 22/07/2022 20:36

Valentina would most likely have the nn Val or possibly Vallie. It’s not my #1 choice but I wouldn’t mind it.

Madeleine - not overly keen but do love nn Maddie
Rose - again, not keen. Prefer rosie/Rosalie
Eleanor - it's okay. Bit boring but classic
Jade - meh
Victoria - not keen
Roisin - hate
Valentina - could grow on me! would be curious to see what nicknames for it?
Louise - hate it, too outdated

cptartapp · 22/07/2022 18:01

Madeleine - no
Rose - no but love Rosa
Eleanor - nice in its entirety but hate Ellie etc which it usually becomes
Jade - definitely no
Victoria - lovely
Roisin- no
Valentina - awful
Louise - dated but love Louisa

bubblegumfloss · 22/07/2022 17:44

Jade isn’t my favourite either, it’s one of DHs picks 😂

It reminds me of an american school bully

I prefer classic names and he seems to prefer what I’d call more out there names.

OP posts:
MiriMollyMartha · 22/07/2022 16:14

Madeleine - don't like, reminds me of McCann, too sad association
Rose - lovely
Eleanor - lovely, love nn Nell
Jade - dated, was the name of like every school bully in the early 2000s
Victoria - gorgeous as a full name bht no good nicknamea
Roisin - it's fine
Valentina - nice but she'd end up Val or Tina, both dated and not nice
Louise - dated, love Louisa

bubblegumfloss · 22/07/2022 13:40

I forgot about the connection with Madeleine McCann, it’s very rare I hear something about the case nowadays. The connection doesn’t completely throw me off but I understand why for some people.

Madeleine - I think the Madeline McCann thing has wasted the name for me
Rose - nice but common
Eleanor - yes cute
Jade - maybe, not blown away by it though. Makes me think of the name Amber somehow, which I prefer I think
Victoria - not keen
Roisin - not keen
Valentina - love this, I think I love the nickname Valle (valley) even more than the name itself
Louise - a bit too ‘classic’ for me but is. A nice name

IStandWithMaya · 22/07/2022 00:05

Madeleine - lovely, I prefer Madeline spelling

Rose - love this

Eleanor - v nice

Jade - no

Victoria - beautiful

Roisin - gorgeous

Valentina - nice

Louise - nice, I prefer Louisa

Laquila · 21/07/2022 23:35

Jade is definitely the odd one out from your list, although I quite like it (and you're unlikely find that many other baby Jades!)

The other names that sprang to mind when I read your list were:

Margherita
Margot
Serena
Helena
Honor
Faith
Felicity
Isobel

...and my wild card is Amabel, which I've always loved but I appreciate will mean a lifetime of spelling it out 😁

Someone upthread mentioned Ramona - love this.

YourWinter · 21/07/2022 23:32

I like them all except Jade. A lot depends how they scan with the surname.

PurpleVioletBlue · 21/07/2022 23:26

Madeleine - lovely, though people will pronounce it differently and she'll probably end up as Maddie, which I don't like. Imogen? Camille? Marguerite?
Rose - pretty, I know a couple of Rosas
Eleanor - lovely, but there are a lot of El- names around. I love Nora / Norah.
Jade - no, Jasmine? Fern?
Victoria - dull
Roisin - nice. Rowan? Ramona?
Valentina - not keen . Vera? Verity? Sienna?
Louise - dated. Eloise?

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/07/2022 22:43

Valentina! Also think Elizabeth is a great connection…..!

20viona · 21/07/2022 22:16

Only like Valentina

pilates · 21/07/2022 22:12

I like them all except Jade and prefer Louisa to Louise

hilix · 21/07/2022 22:07

I like Rose and Madeleine from your list. Eleanor feels overused and the others are a bit drab.

Spidey66 · 21/07/2022 20:14

Love Eleanor. My favourite name.

I also like Roisin, Rose, Madeliene , Victoria, Louise.

Not keen on the others.

bubblegumfloss · 21/07/2022 20:11

If we use Róisín we will be adding fadas, I forgot to add them while typing my shortlist. We are from Ireland so pronunciation isn’t going to be an issue. It’s pronounced Row-sheen where we’re from.

OP posts:
Riverlee · 21/07/2022 20:09

Madeleine, - ok
Rose, - ok, also Rosemary, Rosamund, Rosalind
Eleanor, - nice
Jade, - not so keen, prefer Jasmine
Victoria, - my favourite
Roisin, - Irish name
Valentina, - sounds Italian
Louise. - prefer Louisa

RhubarbCheekbones · 21/07/2022 20:07

if you’re using Róisín, you need to use the síne fada on both the o and the final i. Otherwise that’s not a name. And would be pronounced Roy-sin.
