Spelling help

DH and I like Jadon for a boy and I like the idea of him having the original Hebrew/biblical spelling (DH heritage). I also like the Nn Jay, and he would probably be called this most of the time.

However I am worried about it causing issues for him. I dislike the Jayden spelling but know it’s the most well known, also considering ‘Jaden’ as a bit of a compromise.

so I would just appreciate any thoughts on the spelling options? Especially if you chose a name with many spellings, how did you pick one?

Honestly? The spelling you posted is the nicest, but this name in its Jayden form has become the ultimate shorthand for saying a name is common, chavvy, undesirable etc. Now, there's an interesting discussion to be had around whether those views are savoury or charitable, but the bottom line is that it's the association most people will make when they hear the name and it will be your son who has to live with that.

There are lots of lovely old testament names that don't have the same connotations.

I agree with this. It's awkward to say but that's the benefit of asking for opinions on nameboards, right? People can be really honest. Whereas people IRL feel the need to pretend every name is great.

grumpynamechange · 24/07/2022 14:41

I wouldn't choose Jadon if I'm honest. It was very, very popular a few years ago so seems dated now, and has a very 'naughty boy'/chavvy vibe as a result. Sorry, I know that's horrible but it's true. There are loads of cool Old Testament/Hebrew names, you can definitely do better than Jadon! Josiah? Caleb?

@pinklavenders I agree with you on this!

Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn is a bog standard name but I’m guessing every single Katherine has to spell her name every time she says it. There’s no way you can call a baby Katherine and avoid this. And I think Jadon will be the same.

Lots of names have multiple spellings eg Finlay Finley, Stephen Steven, Claire Clare etc

ReeseWitherfork · 23/07/2022 11:00

Whichever way you spell it there will be constant misspellings because it is a name that's been spelled multiple different ways.

This.

If you're worried about the name causing issues for him, maybe pick another name? Jadon looks to me like it's pronnounced Jadd-on to me. Jaiden, Jaden, Jayden, Jahdon..... pick something more no nonsense if you're bothered about it being misinterpreted.

pinklavenders · 23/07/2022 10:52

Is Jaden smart enough for a grown up man?

Certainly smarter for a grown man than the cutesy names like Alfie, Archie, Teddie!!

user1492757084 · 23/07/2022 10:47

Why not call him Jay .. or James.

Is Jaden smart enough for a grown up successful man?

craggydragon · 22/07/2022 23:04

Whichever way you spell it there will be constant misspellings because it is a name that's been spelled multiple different ways.

It's also a name associated with naughty boys and will mark him out as someone from an uneducated background I'm sorry to say - whether that's fair and just or not it's the truth.

Choose something more neutral?

gemma1993 · 22/07/2022 09:45

@Jessbow in the UK just ‘Jay - den’ like the footballer Jadon Sancho.

absolutely not Jardon! Or Jadd-on Or anything like it. Whoever said Jadon looks like a misspelling, this isn’t the case - it’s the original biblical way.

originally would have been like Jay-h’don (not accurate but trying to describe as best I can) but it’s been popularised to a point where I can’t see this being any sort of issue. I’m more worried about constant misspellings. For example I imagine Amelia/Emilia or Lily/Lilly must have similar issues.

How is is pronounced?
Jadd-on or Jai-don or some other way.?

WudYouSayItInRealLife · 21/07/2022 16:08

Jardon looks like a misspelling but lots of kids have names that people aren't familiar with. If it's your favourite then you should use it. It reminds me of lardon though 🫤 but that might just be me.

I love the name Jay on its own.

SafeHeaven · 21/07/2022 15:50

What about Jamie? James?

gemma1993 · 21/07/2022 15:45

Oh also the actual pronunciation of Jadon is quite hard to describe but people just say Jay-den.

gemma1993 · 21/07/2022 15:44

Some helpful replies thank you! I’m not a fan of Jacob and not sure about Jay on it’s own but thanks.

leaning towards Jaden but keep the responses coming.

Jaden or Jadon

20viona · 21/07/2022 13:40

Jayden for me. Or Jaden. Definitely not Jaydon.

KylieCharlene · 21/07/2022 13:40

Ja-don was my first thought of pronunciation -and I thought it a bit odd.
Jaden is OK if you like the name although if he's going to be Jay then I think Jay is all-round preferable name anyway.

Theoldwoman · 21/07/2022 13:34

I know plenty of Jaydens, two Jadens and one Jaiden.

Why not just go with Jay?

pinklavenders · 21/07/2022 13:29

I prefer the Jadon spelling over Jayden.

Jacob often ends up as Jake.

Holly60 · 21/07/2022 13:06

I think Jacob is much nicer too. Classic and you can still use Jay x

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2022 13:02

There are lots of names that start with J - Jonathan is a classic. Jay Rayner is really Jason. I know 3 Jays IRL and they are James, Jay and Jacqueline on their BC. Jabez shortens to Jay/Jabe the meaning isn't great

To those saying Jadon is pronounce Jad-on Shock

RuthW · 21/07/2022 12:22

I would presume it was said Jad-on by that spelling.

Penfelyn · 21/07/2022 12:20

I think Jaden is a well know spelling because of Jaden Smith. It's the spelling I prefer personally.

How you choose a spelling, usually it's a good idea to go for a well established spelling that won't cause confusion. If there are several such, just pick the one you like best. And whatever you do, don't spell it Jou'lez when you really mean Jules 😂
