Not my name though.

Having to correct pronunciation and/or spelling can be a PITA. Some people are ok with it and others not.
The thing is though that a lot of people dislike being corrected, and if you don't correct them they won't know they got it not quite right.
Some people will just not get the difference between Yaz-min and Yes-meen or Om-arr and Ohm-AAAAH

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 10:13

Thanks. I know a Yasmin (white, english heritage) and a Yasmina (maghrebi heritage)
Yasmin is YAS-min or Yas, Yasmina is Yas-MEEN-ah.

I'd sayياسمين as Yas-meen not Yes-meen

How should it be said, @JustMaggie ?

It’s pronounced without the z sound. It’s an S. Yasmeen.

JustMaggie · 20/07/2022 09:52

The Arabic pronunciation is "yes-MEEN"

If your son is going to grow up in the Arab world all those names are nice. But if he's growing up here in the UK, I would suggest a name that can easily be pronounced by the British. We named our daughter Yasmine, and it gets pronounced "yaz-meen"over here. She's given up on trying to get people to pronounce it right and now wants to change her name to "Elle" 🙄

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2022 20:54

@TheUnexpectedPickle , they are not the same name or the same meaning

handbagsandholidays · 19/07/2022 20:37

I read Zaid and Zayd rather than Z-eyed but can see how it could be either either.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 19/07/2022 20:34

I had a colleague called Zahid, pronounced Zah-heed. I always thought that was a lovely name, and quite unusual. He said its a little used form of Sayed.

I might be biased though, because he is just the most lovely man.

JellyBellyNelly Zaaa id or Zaaa heed?

Zaaa id

redbigbananafeet · 19/07/2022 18:54

SasuJones · 19/07/2022 18:49

I named my son Khalid.. my grandmother didnt understand arabic names, she called him Colin 😂

As long as that was taken with charm I love this x

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2022 07:09

@redbigbananafeet , Zah-eed

That's how I'd have pronounced it too. I taught for two years in Cairo and teach in a diverse area of Glasgow so perhaps have a decent grasp. All lovely names. I had a child in Cairo tell me if Ahmed to imagine I was trying to fog up a mirror of the Ah sound. And Omar the Oh comes from your belly.

Isn't that Zahid, @JellyBellyNelly ? Or better still, could you write it in arabic script please.

No. Not Zahid.

and I’m sorry. I’m an Arabic speaker but I don’t write the language.

Zahid has a very pronounced ‘h’.

Zaid, perhaps I shouldn’t have even said (h) but it was the best way I could describe the funny sound/break in the middle of the name. It’s almost like an invisible sound if that makes sense. I will ask whichever one of my children I see first to explain it to me. They’re bilingual and we’re educated in both languages.

Za + id

Its a long Zaa with a bit of a funny h in the middle then it ends with id

well, where I live anyway. An Arabic speaking country.

@JellyBellyNelly I didn't know about a horrible joke with the pronunciation.

What do you call a boy with a pork chop on his head?

Ahmed. (Ham head to Am ed to Ahmed)

PringlePoppin · 19/07/2022 17:15

Omar or Elias

LisaSimpson77 · 19/07/2022 17:05

I like Elias and Zaid from that list, the others on the list are all much more commonly used in my U.K. school but I'm not sure whether that's relevant or not.

handbagsandholidays · 19/07/2022 16:51

I should have also probably clarified that I meant I would have picked Ziyad for our second baby but we didn't want both of our boys to have the same meanings to their names. Xxx

handbagsandholidays · 19/07/2022 16:49

Mummyxxxx · 19/07/2022 16:35

@handbagsandholidays Ziyad shares the same meaning with 2 other names xx

It does. I must say our eldest is so true to the meaning of the name... he is always striving for more and trying to improve himself in all aspects of his life without any pressure from us. X
