On the name Franklin is it naff? For me too American/Surname but it is DP favourite name. I am trying to sway him towards Francis nn Frank as I prefer older names and Franklin seems too modern

My primary association with it, though, is this: www.goodreads.com/book/show/30313729-franklin-s-flying-bookshop
(Lovely idea, sadly quite clunky text)

Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I'm sure there have been many, many other Franklin's.

Presumably named after Benjamin Franklin. On that note, it's too 'surnamey' for my taste. But if you don't mind surname-style names, why not?

MassiveSalad22 · 13/07/2022 20:46

it’s not a last name

😵‍💫 Benjamin Franklin?

I like it OP but it felt too trendy for us! Which is odd as I agree it is an old name.

RuthW · 13/07/2022 20:45

I dislike modern surname names bur I actually like Franklin.

I think its 10 times better than Francis (are you French) and frank (is he 80 already?).

@blessedbethebutter you see it as an old name? I told DP I thought he had made the name up as I had never heard it before

Ha definitely not made up. It’s the first name of the US president during WW2!

ofwarren · 13/07/2022 20:43

I'm not generally a fan of American sounding or surname names but I do like this one.
Much nicer than Francis or Frank.

GoAround · 13/07/2022 20:41

I think of FDR. So on that basis yes it does sound American but it’s not a last name nor is it modern.

Suzi888 · 13/07/2022 20:41

Good solid name, but I would say in the same league as Alfie/George/Archie. Imo it is old fashioned.
The lead in Snowfall was “Franklin”. I’m sure there’s been a thread with the same name.

I love it. It's a "real" name, op. Nothing modern about it.

blessedbethebutter · 13/07/2022 20:37

I honestly can't imagine a young Franklin.
