Madeleine is french and pronounced - lin. Madeline is American and sometimes pronounced line. However the ‘normal’ name is lin so whichever way you spell it lost will say this

Why is everyone emphasising the MAD of Madeleine?

I'd say Mad eh LAINE with the emphasis on the LAINE.

That's the French pronounciation. More common to stress the first syllable in English.

CredibilityProblem · 12/07/2022 22:07

Spelled like that I'd say Mad-eh-leyn. But I'd say if you're planning to use it then you and your DD will need to develop a thick skin about the mad-eh-leyn vs mad-eh-lin distinction otherwise it will drive you mad(dy).

I am from the North East. When I was a child, many many moons ago now, my grandmother had a friend called Madeleine. Her name was always pronounced as Madeleen.
