Madeleine -
alao is this how you would naturally spell it or would you use Madeline.
just curious if we’d be forever correcting pronunciation and spelling.

Posted too soon - emphasis on MAD, and I would spell it Madeleine.

I had an aunt born around 1915 who spelled it and pronounced it as I do.

mathanxiety · 20/07/2022 16:39

Mad-uh-leen

From Dublin area, Ireland.

garlictwist · 20/07/2022 16:38

Mad-lin.

From
Cumbria.

pinklavenders · 20/07/2022 16:03

Or Caroline?

Much prettier than Mad aline imo. I really don't like the Mad 😡 sound...

Violetandpurple · 12/07/2022 20:13

Mad-uh-line is the pronunciation we like but if she’d forever get mad uh lin I feel like we should avoid it which would be a shame as it’s a very pretty name

I prefer Madalin too. What about

Avaline ? or Adaline?

knackeredagain · 20/07/2022 15:15

Madda-lin (Lancs)

LadyFlumpalot · 20/07/2022 15:12

Mad-uh-lean. I'm from the South East (Berkshire) originally but with a hefty Somerset burr in there as well these days.

djdkdkddkek · 20/07/2022 14:46

Madda-lin
London

pinklavenders · 20/07/2022 14:45

Mad LAINE

I don't like the emphasis on the Mad...

bitelover · 20/07/2022 13:34

In English, I'd say mad-uh-lyn (like McCann).
In French, mad-lehn (like the character in Amelie if you've ever watched it).

Perplexed0522 · 20/07/2022 07:09

Mad-a-leen

Leicestershire.

MiriMollyMartha · 13/07/2022 13:51

Madduh-line (with the line like the end of Caroline).

I'm from Sussex.

99ProblemsButAnIncelAintOne · 13/07/2022 11:51

Mad-a-lin

Like McCann

pinkpanther84 · 13/07/2022 11:42

South west England, Mad uh lin

deedledeedledum · 13/07/2022 11:41

Thighdentitycrisis · 12/07/2022 20:20

Madeline: Madda lin
Madeleine: Madduh line
in south east

first version is more usual in U.K.
I think the other is French ?

I would say Madd eh layne for Madeleine no?

AnnesBrokenSlate · 13/07/2022 10:15

Madeleine: Mad-uh-lane
Madeline: Mad-uh-lin (the uh in the middle is so fast it's hardly heard)

Former from French friends with the name. Latter - Irish.

MooseBreath · 13/07/2022 10:07

I'm from Canada.

Madeleine: Mad-uh-lenn
Madeline: Mad-ahl-eye-n
Madelyn: Mad-ah-lin

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/07/2022 09:54

Should add, the uh sound is barely there.

SatinHeart · 13/07/2022 09:54

I would spell Madeleine but pronounce Maddalinn - I'm from the south east (as is my cousin Madeleine)

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/07/2022 09:53

Madeleine = Mad uh len (south-east)

Madeline - would probably go for Mad uh line, because why else would you spell it that way?

pinklavenders · 13/07/2022 09:52

What's the difference in pronunciation between Lane & Laine?

Lane is Lane/Layn

Laine is wool in French and pronounced more like Lehn. Google it to hear it pronounced!

KirstenBlest · 13/07/2022 08:38

Madlyn. Home Counties

Headbandheart · 13/07/2022 08:23

Madeline rhymes with Caroline not carolyn

madaleine - not sure to be honest. I’d look at it and be a bit hesitant and probably say mada- lean

the more usual pronounciation I’m used to is Mada-Lyn but tbh I have no idea how to spell it so this is more my ignorance

I’ve lived all over the country for. Newcastle to kent and Sussex, yorkshire, cheshire and Lancashire so I don’t think there’s any regional variation going on.

Anxiernie · 13/07/2022 08:21

Lane. More like Laine/Lehn

What's the difference in pronunciation between Lane & Laine? They look like they would be said the same here.

pinklavenders · 13/07/2022 08:18

Madeleine in France is phonetically Mad Lane.

Not really Lane. More like Laine/Lehn. There's no -ay sound in French
