I really like Maggie but don’t like Margaret. I love Maggie Alice but DH thinks she would need to be Margaret Alice as Maggie isn’t a “proper” name IYSWIM.
what’s the mumsnet verdict?

Alice Margaret would be so much nicer.

Maggie sounds like Maggi and is similar to Maggot.

Cindie943811A · 10/07/2022 07:59

I know a one year old Margaret called Maggie from birth

Themidnightcat · 10/07/2022 07:30

Just to clarify I'm not naming my daughter Effy I was just saying I liked it. It's interesting to know what it's a nn for as like mentioned I've only ever heard it from Elizabeth (skins) and I know names can have different nn I've just never heard of it for others ones so glad I made the post.

I'm not too sure about Maggie Alice but if you like it, go for it there's stranger names around.

Cloud16 · 09/07/2022 20:51

I don't like combo because it's a bit like maggot lice...

I like Maggie on its own though!

Kilpitlees · 09/07/2022 19:12

I absolutely love Maggie Alice. I think it absolutely rocks !😎

woolwinder · 09/07/2022 19:12

We registered daughter with Betty as her middle name; the registrar said 'Did you mean 'Elizabeth'? No, we said, B-E-T-T-Y. This was in 1977.

ofwarren · 09/07/2022 19:09

It's an okay name but I don't think it goes with Alice.

felulageller · 09/07/2022 19:07

Maggie is fine.

It's not like you're suggesting 'Mags' or 'Peggy'.

PancakesWithCheese · 09/07/2022 19:05

My DM is Margaret, she hates it.

Personally I don’t like Maggie, I think it’s quite harsh sounding. It’s the ‘ag’. I don’t like Agatha or Aggie either.

However I don’t think it flows with Alice as it’s another ‘A’ sound. I think it needs another middle name.

Lazypuppy · 09/07/2022 18:22

I agree with DH, full name on Birth Certificate, known as niclname if you want. Give the child options for future, applying for jobs, at different ages and stages of life etc

MsMcGonagall · 09/07/2022 18:20

If I was Maggie I would rather be Maggie on the birth certificate than Margaret, only because Margaret seems ugly/old-fashioned while Maggie seems OK.

I've got one of each - a DD with a technical diminutive who is exactly that on the birth certificate. And a DS who has a long form on his bc.

With DS I think the factors for the extra admin faff that a pp mentioned were: his name would only be 2 letters long if it was the diminutive on the bc. and they are similar (eg Charlie is similar to Charles in a way that Maggie is not similar to Margaret)

@HaveringWavering I'm not sure, I've only ever heard it for Elizabeth - I thought Josie was the nn for Josephine.

@Themidnightcat

I know the character in skins was Elizabeth but traditionally it’s Euphemia, but Seraphina or Josephine work. You could also just use it for anything beginning with F. I do think Effy is too much of a nn to be a full name, and your daughter might like some options.

Craftybodger · 08/07/2022 20:32

I like the name Maggie but it’s a little too close to maggot for me. I also agree with DH that it’s better as a short-form than a Christian name.

I love the name Alice.

I also agree that it doesn’t flow very well, Alice Maggie is better but I’m still not keen on the combination.

I’d keep Alice, use as a Christian name and choose a new middle name.

congratulations on your baby.

PrancerandDancer · 08/07/2022 20:17

I have a Maggie.

I had a similar dilemma, but in the end we could not decide on a "long" name and knew we wouldn't use it so she's just Maggie on her BC. Ironically, we now called her Margaret as a nick name 🤦‍♀️

Personally, not keen on it with Alice. Alice is a lovely name but it does sound awkward.

AliceMcK · 08/07/2022 20:10

Love Maggie. Obviously like Alice.

RuthW · 08/07/2022 19:50

I agree with your husband

StarlingsInTheRoof · 08/07/2022 17:49

Why do people think Margot is a full name and Maggie isn't? Surely Margot is short for Marguerite?

Love Maggie by the way.

Sittininafield · 08/07/2022 17:23

I agree with your dh. It’s a cute name but very informal.

daisypond · 08/07/2022 17:20

I like Maggie but I wouldn’t have it as a bc name. I would definitely go for Margaret or Marguerite etc as a final name.

boniobiscuit · 08/07/2022 16:48

I love Maggie Alice and think she sounds cool AF -I say go for it!!

pinklavenders · 08/07/2022 15:35

Maggie sounds like Maggi www.maggi.co.uk

I much much prefer Margaret!

Flangelica · 08/07/2022 11:04

I don't like Margaret but love Magdalene/Magdalena. I probably wouldn't use just Maggie, although I like it a lot.

Flangelica · 08/07/2022 11:03

Themidnightcat · 08/07/2022 06:34

We're in a similar boat, I really like Effy but not Elizabeth but really I don't think it matters.

I know an Effy, full name Josephine. Could also be a nickname for Seraphina (Sephy/Effy) or Euphemia (which is yuck but still)

HaveringWavering · 08/07/2022 09:47

Themidnightcat · 08/07/2022 08:10

@HaveringWavering I'm not sure, I've only ever heard it for Elizabeth - I thought Josie was the nn for Josephine.

A name can have more than one nickname- eg Lizzie, Beth for Elizabeth or Maggie, Peggy for Margaret.

JosEPHine. That’s where “Effie” comes from. It bears no relation to Elizabeth, unless you have a pronounced Essex or Lahndan accent and say ”Elizabeff”.
