Strong boy names -SBCU

Hi everyone,

We had our baby boy on Thursday morning and while he was a lovely, (unexpectedly!) chunky 8lbs, he’s had to stay in the Special Baby Care Unit due to issues with his oxygen levels and “sleepiness” and has had quite a few tests done. We were already struggling to think of/agree on names but now that he’s here and having a tough time, I feel like he needs a “strong” name. My favourites throughout pregnancy had been Robin and Teddy and while I still love them, I just don’t think they suit him now.

Wondered if anyone has any suggestions? I hate that he’s in SBCU and only known as “Baby Surname”. It feels so impersonal when all the other babies have their names up on the board.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I absolutely agree with the idea of sticking with the name you love. Unfortunately DH was never keen on Robin (it was one of his favourites for a girl) so I think I’d lost that battle anyway!

We think we’ve now narrowed it down to:
Lachlan
Noah
Benjamin
Ruaridh

@AuraBora @PollyPeeves DH really loves Lachlan but despite being Scottish, I always mispronounce it. I think I might just have to learn to say it properly!

@YorkshireTeaCup thank you so much for your message. We really took that on board and I think it was the right call rather than rushing into a name.

Pleased to say baby got home yesterday and is doing SO well. The staff in SCBU were amazing and it was lovely seeing one of the other babies he was in with make a big step in their own journey as we were leaving ❤

@Junebug22 what a lovely update - you are very welcome! Enjoy all those special cuddles at home ❤❤❤

@Junebug22 Lachlan and Lauchlan are both great and strong names I'd go with one of those

I have an Edward who spent a long long time in NICU. He’s 16 now and is mainly known as Ed. DS2 has a close friend whose name is Teddy, short for Theodore.

I know of someone else whose DS was in NICU for a long time who specifically wanted a ‘strong’ name. They chose Isaac.

Good luck with getting your baby boy home soon x

What about Ned as an alternative? You can't use Ned in Scotland, it's a slang word used for chav/ scally etc!!

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 04/07/2022 16:44

Tobias
Theodore
Kit
Xander

AuraBora · 04/07/2022 13:32

I also think Lachlan/Lauchlan (not sure of spelling) is a really fab name especially since you're in Scotland.
Also like Alexander (my personal fave for my LO but DP wasn't keen) and Robert (not used much round here in SE England)
Whilst Teddy is sweet, round here it's extremely common (at least 3 at my daughter's nursery) That would put me off a bit but of course up to you, may not be the case where you are. What about Ned as an alternative? (Not sure I'd this would be seen as strong or not...)

Congratulations! These might be too Scottish.....
Fergus
Angus
Douglas / Dougie
Alistair
Hamish
Murdo

Ah mine was in SCBU for a while, it’s hard. Take care of yourself, one day at a time.

I love Robin and Teddy. You could have Robert with Robin as a nn, or Edward with Teddy. Personally I would stick with the name you love and not let these days define him.

Saying that there are some great suggestions here and I will add Leo to the mix. Get well soon little lion.

I like this message of sticking with the name you love

Maybe a bit more of a 'softer' sounding name but I know it's a bit more used in Scotland than here in England - the Gaelic meaning of 'Evan' means Young Warrior.

My son was born prematurely and spent a week in scbu. We named him Robert (Robbie) and he's now a gorgeous healthy 3 1/2 year old

My 6m old is also called Robert (Robbie) 🤗 his 3 yr old brother is called Jason.

YorkshireTeaCup · 03/07/2022 22:08

Aah congratulations on the birth of your little one. My DD was in SCBU for two weeks and we didn't pick her name until we were almost discharged. I wanted to wait until she was home and i spent some time with her outside of a medical setting to decide. I also found the staff asked every shift change if we had picked a name, which i found an added stress. Totally fine if you want to pick a name now but also came on to say please don't feel pressured by others in the unit!
