One week old baby- husband won't discuss a name.

DD3 born last week. Now ten days old.

For the other two we compromised on names, although husband always exaggerates claims he feels the other two were names he compromised on and were never his own choices. This is wrong. We both compromised and neither got our first choice.

DD3 and he wants something so plain and generic I just cannot even contemplate it. Angela. I don't like it. Fairly dated now. We are also Scottish and Irish so everyone is expecting something Scottish, Irish or Celtic especially as other two DC have those connotations to their names.

He is refusing to even have a discussion on any other name. Keeps saying hello little Angela to the baby to wind me up. Last night I said I wouldn't be bullied into a name I didn't like, especially as this week he has gone straight back to work 3 days post birth, he has been no help with the baby. In a week I'd say he's changed 3 nappies. Given her one feed. Yet despite his hopelessness it's a my way or highway name.

The amount of texts I am receiving asking about a name is driving me mad and clearly indicates we're having problems.

What would you do?

I do think Evangelina is a good comprise offer, and I actually like Angelina too.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 13:35

@busymamaof2 , from the Baby Names threads there seems to be a connection between having a baby's name being foisted and on PND. I'm saying that as a lay observer (and participant). Assert your right to veto a name.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 01/07/2022 13:34

You have 6 weeks if necessary - use 'em one of ours didn't have a name until he was a month old.

FWIW whilst I prefer your names to his I think the best way to name babies involves both sides having an absolute veto. You need to both go back to the drawing board if necessary and come up with new ideas to go through together.

If OH is genuinely utterly unprepared of treating you with that much respect I think that that would cause me to look again at the relationship. Is there any chance that your OH is in fact a ...[insert preferred expletive] and has just been reigning it in to the exact point of as much as he reckoned he could get away with at any given point?

WheekestLink · 01/07/2022 13:33

I think Angela is a beautiful name. Do you think you are both quite stubborn?

Oceanus · 01/07/2022 13:33

Evangelina has a nice ring to it too! Sounds lovely!

SoftSheen · 01/07/2022 13:31

Yes, Evangelina. DH can call her Angela for short, you can use e.g. Evie. DD will choose her own abbreviation when she's old enough to express a preference.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 13:27

or Angelica, Angela with a bit of ick

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 13:26

EvANGELAline? You sure about that?
EvANGELinA perhaps?

marrymeadam · 01/07/2022 13:21

What about EvANGELAline? It has Angela in it but it is much prettier.

Dullardmullard · 01/07/2022 13:20

Time is running out to register the baby so time for a sit down for names

if he won’t discuss I’d go and register her your name but this might be the end of your marriage so be warned there.

nansi sounds to me horrid sorry.
Orla mmm
Megan sounds fine and your right none would go with Angela as a middle name at all.

BecauseICan22 · 01/07/2022 13:19

GiltEdges · 01/07/2022 06:31

This kind of attitude baffles me.

As they're married, OPs husband could also sneak off and register the baby, if he so chose. Maybe he already has and she's called "Angela" officially already 🤷🏼‍♀️

There's such a double standard on MN sometimes, because the comments if he had done it would be completely different.

OP - you're going to have to sit down with him again and compromise. Agree to use as a middle and accept that you'll just have to find a different first name that it goes with better. It really isn't the worst name in the world.

THIS!!!!

OP, she is your husband's daughter too. Find a compromise.

I also presume he's at work because you're either at home with the baby or on mat leave, I can't see how he's wrong for being at work?

Bournetilly · 01/07/2022 13:19

I think you should let him have more of a say, he’s wanted the name Angela since DD1 and then you named your DS after your grandfather, he should definitely get more of a say, maybe Angela as a middle name and a first name you both agree on.
Id much rather be named Angela than Nansi, Nancy/ Nansi is awful (he probably feels the same way).

User2145738790 · 01/07/2022 13:16

Was he useless with the first 2 children?

Misses point of thread

DotDotDotDotDot · 01/07/2022 13:15

Sorry I made a mistake with my pp, the Irish spelling of Nancy is Nainsí. My cousin called daughter this.

Oceanus · 01/07/2022 13:14

Just wanted to say I love the name Orla OP! It has such a nice ring to it. I can see a little wee girl with it and I can picture a grown woman with a posh job with it too.

SuffolkPunch27 · 01/07/2022 13:12

AndStand · 01/07/2022 12:43

This is the first time I've seen my name crop up on baby naming!!
Personally I like Angela, though most people call me Angie.

But out of your choices OP I like Orla.

I didn't realise some people held such a strong hatred of the name!! 😔😉

Same here 😂 hello fellow Angela!!
I personally hate being called "Angie" and prefer "Ange"

Marcipex · 01/07/2022 13:10

I really like Nansí or Nansi. Very pretty.

I don’t like Angela, but I do know an Angelica which is nicer. I like your partner’s behaviour even less.

TolkiensFallow · 01/07/2022 13:10

Nansi is lovely!

Personally I’d always pop a name I don’t like in as a middle name for the brownie points!

SuffolkPunch27 · 01/07/2022 13:09

Scottish mid 30s ahem "lady" here that goes by the name Angela. To be far, I've yet to come across another Angela my age. We Angela's are few and far between!
Think you need to both sit down and both come to compromise in regards to a name and find something you can both agree on otherwise there will be underlying resentment

TokyoTen · 01/07/2022 13:05

Well... you can just go and register the baby yourself. Job done if he won't discuss.

IrisVersicolor · 01/07/2022 13:05

DotDotDotDotDot · 01/07/2022 13:03

Sorry if it’s been said already but Nansí is the Irish spelling of Nancy, both spellings I like. I can’t believe how many people are saying op should just call their baby Angela when she clearly dislikes the name. OP I hope you find a resolution, your partner has acted like a bully, enjoy your new baby.

Love Nansí

MissMoodyMoo · 01/07/2022 13:04

What about Angelina?

Lina for short?

DotDotDotDotDot · 01/07/2022 13:03

goodmorningcampers · 01/07/2022 13:01

In my neck of the woods Angela is the code word if you need help on a date, go to bar and 'Ask for Angela' . Not sure if this will make the name more or less popular

GlitteryGreen · 01/07/2022 12:54

I agree with @GiltEdges , I am so surprised so many are saying they'd just go and register the baby as whatever they wanted 😕 That would cause an almighty row between any couple, surely?

I am pregnant and it has been hard to agree a girl's name with my DP as we just have completely different tastes. I had set my heart on a name but he hated it, and he wanted to name her after his grandmother which I wasn't comfortable with. We both had to let those go and find something else we both didn't hate - which we have done, even though it's not our first choice.

If either of us was to go and register the baby with our own choice, despite the other saying no, I honestly think we'd probably split up over it!! Massive betrayal of trust.
