Just that, really - two names we're considering at the moment. Thanks!

I always thing Oscar is more a dog's name, so it's Aiden for me.

Both very good but I have to agree

puddingandsun · 03/07/2022 22:01

*where abouts
And the Jewish ref obviously because of your username x

Oscar.

Aidan = naughty boy or teenage transman.

?!? Can I ask where snouts do you live? I know a few middle class Jewish boys named Aidan.

Ffs Aidan

bobbythevet · 03/07/2022 08:32

Aiden*

bobbythevet · 03/07/2022 08:32

I would go Auden purely because Oscar is very popular. Both lovely

Aspidistra1 · 03/07/2022 08:30

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I know lots of little Oscars and really like Aidan as being a bit different but not unknown so that would be my preference.

SeanChailleach · 03/07/2022 08:21

I love both names
Oscar for Wilde
Aidan because it feels like the most classic of Irish names.
Also, an uncle-cousin of mine was named Aidan MacCarthy. He was a doctor in the RAF during WWII. He was captured by the Japanese and held in a POW camp in Nagasaki until the end of the war. There's a book. And a film.
It's a hero's name.

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 16:27

Ooohhh. I did look both names up thinking they might have the same meaning or something! I’m shamefully not too clued up on mythology! But yes that would certainly put a pin on Oisin 😂 it’s still a beautiful name though.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 16:27

their tenuous connection means they'd like a celtic name
I don't see the problem with using any name you like, Celtic or otherwise no matter where you're from.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 16:24

@Kanaloa en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niamh_(mythology)

Afrodizzyak · 01/07/2022 16:23

Aidan is a lovely name.
At school we used to call fleas "Oscars", so I'm biased. 😕

uncomfortablydumb53 · 01/07/2022 16:12

I like Aidan

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 16:07

Cross-posted. Bored of this. Bye

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 16:07

How come Niamh & Oisin can’t go together? Is there a connection I don’t know? Niamh is lovely though, but with a sister Niamh I think I’d definitely choose Aidan over Oscar. Aidan seems to ‘fit’ more with Niamh. Although of course it doesn’t really matter.

ComfyChairPose · 01/07/2022 15:56

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 15:47

What type then @KirstenBlest ?

Yes, I would love you to articulate this type as well as you can @KirstenBlest

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 15:55

@JaneJeffer , the type to pick a name that seems fresh or because their tenuous connection means they'd like a celtic name (e.g. grandma was irish or whatever)

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 15:47

What type then @KirstenBlest ?

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 15:40

@JaneJeffer , what I actually posted was The names from the celtic countries tend to be popular with a certain type - the names seeming fresh or there's a loose connection.

SycamoreTall · 01/07/2022 15:23

@shivawn No, I'm in England. Can't have Oisín as I have a Niamh. 😄

I do like a good bun fight, thanks all. I am not fazed by accusations of being "down-market" for liking Irish names, fortunately.

I love them both, and had both on my list, but for me Aidan would just about squeak into the lead. Its meaning 'little fire' would have suited my feisty little redhead down to the ground.

I have an Oscar and an Aiden so I think they are both great choices.

Both mine can be naughty at times though, but also fun and loving lads.

Oh man… maybe if you’d named them William instead. Not too late to change it though! I guarantee if you start calling them both William tonight they’ll both me in bed asleep by 8pm and will wake at 8.45am eager for a fun day of chores and homework.
