I think you have to be really careful that, in your desire to be “unique” (really unusual), you don’t just end up giving your child a name that is rare because it’s bloody awful! Or, as in Cillian, a perfectly nice name that you don’t know how to pronounce because you’ve never heard it said in real life.

Why does his name have to be 'unique'? Every child is unique. It doesn't mean you have to saddle them with a name they have to constantly explain or spell just because his parents wanted to stand out.

Em308 · 26/06/2022 22:58

Only unique name I’ve ever heard - Cashel - but it wouldn’t be unique anymore if you used it.

Joaquim? Not to my taste but used by a distant relative. Pronounced Jo a kim…

No it really isn't. More like Wa-keem.

WingBingo · 26/06/2022 22:53

Jo-A-Kim? He’ll be mortified when he is older 😁

Louise0701 · 26/06/2022 22:53

I love the name Zephan but wasn’t brave enough to use it and DH hates it

dropthevipers · 26/06/2022 22:52

Until mum put her foot down, dad was going to call me Hereward (anglo saxon head case)

MumofSpud · 26/06/2022 22:51

There's a reason names remain unique!
As PP has suggested - these will be the only ones in their class/year:
Gary
Alan
Keith
Barry

Isn't it pronounced more like whack-eem?

I personally thought lucien was not very unique just slightly unusual.. I did like Cillian but husband said it sounds to close to silly.

live in UK but open to any names to be honest I just so far don't like any I've come across

Cillian is pronounced Killian.

If you like an S sound along with an L:
Cecil
Solomon
Sylvester
Cyril
Selwyn

@RhubarbFairy Marmaduke is wonderful. When I was a little girl I had a magazine called Diana and one of the characters, very into fashion, was called Hermione and she had a brother called Marmaduke. Off topic - my apologies.

Here are the names are my list that were unranked in 2020 (that is that there were not three or more uses of them in England and Wales). I don't think all of them are usable, but with so little to go on for your taste - unique was the only factor I could match. I'd make sure to double check the popularity of any names which are suggested here if popularity is a concern to you. I've seen Luca suggested and that's the 25th most popular name and way too popular for me to consider. The Dark Greener website is a great resource if you are in England or Wales.

I'm sure I've seen Etienne popping up on lots of threads on here. It might not remain rare for long.

Well I know three Atticus's so that's definitely not unusual in my area.

One had a brother called Marmaduke. Now that is unusual.
