Unusual (as in not given to many children) is fine. Bloody impossible to know how to spell, is not.

We are currently moving overseas and signing DC up to school, sports, clubs etc. Makes life so much easier than they have classic, recognisable names (think William, Alexander, James, ...)

They have never been in a class or sports group with another child with their name.

Are we sure Balonz isn't on the list?

Joaquim? Not to my taste but used by a distant relative. Pronounced Jo a kim…

I thought it was pronounced 'hwak-eem'?

mathanxiety · 27/06/2022 04:21

Cillian is pronounced Killian. It's a hard C.

There is a small boy at my dad's church called Boniface, pronounced bonny fass. I've never come across another and I was a supply teacher so I've heard lots of names. Including a Eunique.

If you like Japanese names then Kazan - it means fiery volcano which is pretty cool.

Benjiro? If he doesn't like it then he can be a Ben.

Arkle.
Frankel.
I don't know of any humans called either of those.

Garybelle has a very zeitgeisty gender fluidity, but might end up being too popular.

Cillian is a (genuinely) lovely name!

Sebastian is fine. Dominic is similar, Francis, Nathan.

he’ll be in a sea of -ies/Finns/just look at name fads and avoid them 🤷🏻‍♀️

hey I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I posted you guys are right I meant unusual...reason I wrote unique was because a lot of the baby sites spam the word and I kind of Got side tracked by it. Sorry for that.

in terms of why I want an unusual name is because I don't want him to have the same name as some of his future classmates if there's 2 or 3 other kids in the school with the name etc I'm not bothered.

my other child has an unusual name too but the name is super common in Japan and haven't yet come across with her name in my circle there probably will be and that's completely fine.

The other issue is so far I've not fallen in love with any names I have liked some of them but it wasn't the same instant connection like my first child's name hence why I asked everyone on here to help. If I fell in love with Simon or Sebastian I would absolutely pick it but I just don't have that inner feeling.

I hope this clarifies the situation

Actual unique name for the poor kid would be a result of blindly touching the keyboard.

Surely that should be Æthelred ?Grin

Though maybe using an æsh is a bit much if you're not Elon Musk.

Dinoteeth · 27/06/2022 00:58

James / Jimmy every Jimmy I know except one is over 60.

Albert / Bert

Gary

Names that will be fairly unique amongst his peers but not completely off the wall.

Yes - I spelt it wrong 🙄 - Should have been Joachim pronounced Jo A Kim. He is a very distant relative in my defence 😅

Apologies I have just Google voice searched this and you are right, it's a new one for me and I quite like it!

I think Joachim and Joaquin and all variations are pronounced Wah-keen/m. Might be wrong.

My baby boy is Marcel which isn't unique or maybe even unusual but I love it. We considered Solomon for him, love that too but maybe not unusual enough either.

SpangledShambles · 27/06/2022 00:23

Hmmm as someone with an unusual name- think it through. Kids prefer to have normal names to fit in. Later in life constantly spelling out an unusual name is a pia. Yes your kid is unique- you don’t have to saddle them with your quest to ensure they are the most unusual.
