Baby name Ives

I really like the name Ives for a boy, pronounced to rhyme with “dives” rather than like Eve. I like that it’s uncommon but simple and familiar because of St Ives.

What do you think? Is it too place namey? I’m not keen on others like London or Milan but for some reason love this one!

I like Ivo a lot.

I know a few Ivys who get nicknamed Ives, so that's my first association. Like Poppy > Pops and Ruby > Rubes, which is also common in my area.

Miles is the other one we’ve discussed Maya! I do like it but something just isn’t quite clicking. Haven’t ruled it out though.

How about:

Giles
Piers
Miles
James

I do like Idris, although I instantly think of Idris Elba.

Innes is interesting… will have to mull that one over.

Thanks all!

I know someone with the surname Ives. Nice enough surname but not keen as a first name. I think Ivo/Ivan are better.

JanglyBeads · 18/06/2022 15:19

I haven't heard of it as a name, which normally would make me immediately dislike it, but... I'm kind of into Ives.

This is me!

I love Yves and would have liked to name a DS that, if it wasn't for the popularity of Eve names for girls, and we had a DD anyway.

Ivo I adore and is a potential for any future DS. I see someone else has suggested Idris which I also love.

ChagSameachDoreen · 18/06/2022 14:42

Sounds like an old Yorkshireman telling you he's got hives.

daisypond · 18/06/2022 14:40

I think it’s fine. It’s a name, or there wouldn’t be a saint Ives. It’s an anglicisation of similar names like Ivo, Yves etc and is valid.

SatinHeart · 18/06/2022 14:38

It's not a name I'm familiar with. I'm sorry to say that without your explanation of the pronunciation, my first thought would be that you couldn't spell Yves.

sunisshining7 · 18/06/2022 14:32

I really like it! I would have pronounced it Yves (Eeves) though I think

Luckingfovely · 18/06/2022 14:31

No, no, and no.

Wow, more negative than I’d expected 😬 It is a legitimate name as well as a place, it’s an English form of Yves. But clearly not everyone’s cup of tea. Can’t use Ivo because of the ending, but that’s lovely too.

Miles is our other favourite but it doesn’t excite me. Any more suggestions in the same vein? Doesn’t have to end in S although I do seem to be drawn to those.

Idris
Julius
Soames
Tobias

Or just go with the name you love!

Mycatsgoldtooth · 18/06/2022 14:25

I love it… but then I have a son called Ives. Glad I never canvass for opinion on names as I might have had a wobble. Never had any negativity, people say it properly and it suits him.

I rather like it. Ivor is nice too (and was my grandfather's name!)

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/06/2022 13:07

It’s not the absolute worst, but it’s not very nice.

Ivo or Ivor are much nicer

RevoltingHumanHead · 18/06/2022 12:14

I've never met a person called Ives. I'd probably assume it was some kind of aristo family name.

BE22 · 18/06/2022 11:44

Twizbe · 18/06/2022 11:15

That's cool. I have to say I couldn't use Ivo either but I guess not everyone goes to the Ivo lol.

Yeah I'd never use it for that reason😆

Smidge001 · 18/06/2022 11:27

If he lives in several parts of England I imagine it'd get pronounced "oives" by most people. Which is just awful.
Even if everyone you deal with says their "I" s clearly, it's a rubbish name I'm afraid.

Twizbe · 18/06/2022 11:15

BE22 · 18/06/2022 11:04

@Twizbe I grew up there too (still there in fact)
That's why I suggested Ivo too!🙂

PritiPatelsMaker · 18/06/2022 11:14

Even Ivan would be better and that's just terrible Grin
