Thoughts on Lois? I think it's sweet for a little girl and strong sounding for a woman. Underused but not 'out there'. What do you think? Do you know any?

I moved to Wales and teachers would pronounce it the Welsh way! It used to annoy me soooo much.
The best way is the lois lane way!!!

pixiebex86 · 27/06/2022 14:05

My middle name. I love it

GuybrushT · 20/06/2022 21:08

I really love it, but popularity definitely depends on where you live (if that matters to you) - I'm in Scotland and it's super popular here, I know loads!

schoolsoutforever · 20/06/2022 20:27

Lois has been my favourite woman’s/girl’s name since I was about 10! Love it!

yui · 20/06/2022 13:17

I've always liked it. I've met a few over the years who would be in their 20s or 30s by now. It's the kind of name that's familiar to most people but unusual at the same time. It also has a soft sound and I appreciate the Biblical significance.

Perhaps it depends on your location, but I've only heard it pronounced Low-is.

I would pronounce Lois Lane as Loyce. (Welsh🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿)

@Justkeeppedaling

That’s not how the character’s name is pronounced though?

@SummerPuddings there was another Jewish Grandmother name beginning with L that should have been on the list but couldn't remember what it was, but it suddenly came to me: Lorelei !

Love it!

Ruby
Blanche
Sadie
Lucille
Leah

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/06/2022 18:43

I know one in her 30’s. She’s lovely.
Great name! I pronounce it as Low is

My late mother's name. She used to get mad sometimes when people mispronounced it to rhyme with rejoice.. Had they not heard of Lois Lane, she would ask.

I would pronounce Lois Lane as Loyce. (Welsh🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿)

Toughtimesagain · 17/06/2022 16:21

I know two - one is in her 70s, the other about 40. It’s a lovely name. Unusual but not whacky.

Cornettoninja · 17/06/2022 12:17

That’s a truly lovely name @wheresthehope

Squashedraddish · 17/06/2022 12:16

I’m welsh and know a few pronounced to rhyme with joyce. But I prefer the English pronunciation of low-iss

wheresthehope · 17/06/2022 12:16

My 12 week old is named Gabrielle Lois after her grandmother. Grandma was Lois.
I think it’s a lovely classic type of name 💗

KirstenBlest · 17/06/2022 12:13

I can't say I like it a lot. Like Leah and Lydia it's a classic but doesn't strike me as strong.

L names like Lily and Ellie have been popular for so long that they all seem a bit samey

SemperIdem · 17/06/2022 11:45

I know an adult one - she’s a lovely person.

I know of another with the “Lowis” spelling and can’t fully explain how intensely I dislike it vs Lois.

GreatCuppa · 17/06/2022 11:15

Never liked it, personally. I don’t know why I don’t like it, I just don’t!

KirstenBlest · 17/06/2022 09:52

@SummerPuddings , yeah but people will probably hear it as Louise or Lewis or just say it as Lois, and accents are a PITA.

ofwarren · 17/06/2022 09:29

Lovely name

Cornettoninja · 17/06/2022 09:29

Ravenclawdropout · 16/06/2022 22:15

Personally I love Lois.

To me it would be grouped with names such as: Dolores, Delphine, Candice, Francine, Lalage and Betty.

Jewish grandmothers that were partying at the same resort as Baby in "Dirty Dancing".

What a great list of names! Dolores and Candice really appeal to me.

OP, Lois is a fabulous name and a really refreshing step away from the frilly names that have been popular for a while.

I think there’s a fairly strong association with the Family Guy character but I wouldn’t let that put me off personally, those kinds of associations are broken pretty quickly once they’re here and owning their own name.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 17/06/2022 09:27

I knew one at school and wasn't keen but now I know an adult one who is lovely and it's grown on me. She's posh and arty.

SummerPuddings · 17/06/2022 09:26

Prefer the French spelling Loïs.

SummerPuddings · 17/06/2022 09:22

Jewish grandmothers that were partying at the same resort as Baby in "Dirty Dancing*".

Love this as an inspiration for baby names category!! 👏👏👏

SummerPuddings · 17/06/2022 09:21

Love.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/06/2022 09:02

@purpleme12 , the Loyce pronunciation is Welsh - Lois is a biblical name and welsh pronunciation is phonetic with the o+i forming a diphthong.

The Lo-eece is french and needs the diaeresis on the i to get the pronunciation.

Lois is the UK is usually Low-is, but if you had a Carys and Lois you'd assume a Welsh connection as they are both popular names in Wales.
