I mean real names not La-A and Lemonjello or Chlamydia or other urban legends.

A friend in the U.S has called her baby son, Sundance. I rather like it in a way though I was taken aback at first.

I met a McLaren recently too, not as unusual as Sundance but not something that you encounter every day either.

@everythingcrossed it will be spelt Lettice, it’s a really old name. I know of some older Lettice’s that are close relatives to Duke’s but it’s very unusual now!

Cub for a little boy, I can't get my head around it. Imagine being an adult with some of these names!
There's a little girl called Alison in my sons class, which isn't unusual but they're 6, I think it's lovely though!

Trainfromredhill · 16/06/2022 23:31

Quill. I thought they were talking about a pen.

Elva. I'm not sure she realised she was calling her daughter a baby eel.

Helenloveslee4eva · 16/06/2022 23:24

Ignore me as not babies ( I think you are straying into identifiable with rare names of a certain age )

but the most unusual names I’ve encountered are

Hereward - a real Anglo Saxon name nit made up - just very unusual

and Arras. Which is a pretty much made up name really of a person no longer with us - born just after dad survived the battle of Arras in the 1st world war. So made up names ard not new . Not sure if I like it but much respect for the origin and not using a Nick name but baring it respectfully for nearly 90 yrs.

Many years ago I looked after a boy called Zeppelin. Since then I have come across a Pirate and, at my daughter's toddler group, there was a Lettuce - possibly not spelled like that but that's what it sounded like. I also knew (adult) Boniface and Isambard.

Interesting. I've heard of Atlas but never met one but I've never heard of Arrow being used as a nickname.

That just reminded me that another friend has a baby son called Tiger.

I love the name Atlas, very unique!

MyCatIsInCharge · 16/06/2022 23:10

Aw, @Squiff70 , that brings back fond memories of teaching in France - I taught a little girl named Faustine, and it really raised eyebrows as a name back then. Think it was seen as very unusual and probably dated but I liked it.

I know someone with a toddler named Ian, which just sounds wrong to me.

There is a Kie in my DC’s class (I presume a variant of Kai but spelling it to rhyme with “die”?).

I have also heard of a Fenton born within the past year or so.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 16/06/2022 22:29

Dd has a Thor in her class.
DS knows a Fenton, Phoenix and marshall
dsis also knows a Phoenix and a boy called Kaan
we know a girl called blue,.
ds has a unique name, I can’t say as it will be very very outing.
i love unique names, I think it’s better than being 1 in a million kids called Alfie or Olivia etc.

But if my DC were called v popular names like Alfie / Daisy and there were 2/3 of them in a class/school I would be less disappointed than if I had chosen a 'unique' name and another child was called the same.
This is the problem parents are too obsessed with wanting unique names (of which there aren't unless you completely make them up) just think the child is unique enough!

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 16/06/2022 23:07

We have a Chance (boy) in the extended family.
This is pretty outing, but my dgd is called Snow. Her sister, due in the winter, will be called Storm.
