Edgar vs Eugene nn Gene

Which one would take your vote? I prefer Eugene nn gene. Edgar is lovely as a full name but do not like Ed/Eddy nn.

I have an Edgar :) We get lots of compliments on it. We were going to call him Ted as a nickname, but I found I actually quite like Eddy and it suits him. Highly recommend.

Eugene is an appalling name.

Edgar is great but you may well get Ed/Eddie.

I think Edgar is a charming and beautiful name. Really dislike Eugene, don't think it suits a toddler.

Eugene is a Franco-American name often shortened to Gene as in Pitney etc.

Go for what you like!

According to the baby name site I looked at it came to England from France in the 11th century. So it has been here a while.

I prefer Eugene. I think it has a fun charm. Edgar is a no go if Ed/Eddie is unacceptable for you, and it just makes me think of the butler from the Aristocats.

I love Edgar (and Edwin) not a great fan of Eugene, I know one who calls himself by his middle name instead.

Neither are to my taste, but I'd choose Edgar over Eugene. Can't get on board with Eugene at all... I've never met a Eugene that I liked, and it reminds me if eugenics

I loved Gene Kelly (he was a Eugene) thought he was one of the nicest actors unless he was just acting in his interviews.

I know a 17 year old Edgar and a 20 year old Edgar. Neither ever get shortened. I don't like Eugene at all. It reminds me of Tangled.

Neither are to my taste, but if you dislike Ed then that definitely rules out Edgar.

Personally, I like Ed so would have suggested Edmund or Edward as alternatives.

If you like Gene, do you like Gus? (short for Angus or Fergus?)

I find Eugene an entirely unappealing name. Edgar I think is quite charming.

However, if Ed/Eddy nicknames are complete no goes for you then you have to rule out Edgar. It isn't inevitable, some Edgar's will never shorten their names, but can't ever rule out the possibility that your little Edgar might like being an Ed.
