Names someone would like if they like Joanie and June

Merryclaire · 04/06/2022 08:50

At a bit of an impasse with DH over baby name. He loves Joanie (originally Joni but I worried about the unconventional spelling) and struggles to entertain another name. I like it, but not sure it’s ‘the one’.

We both quite like June, which is along the same lines. I guess because it’s similar.

It doesn’t need to start with J!

Any ideas for names that might appeal to his tastes?

I think Joni spelt that way is well known and seems like a complete name. Joanie looks more like a shortening in which case I agree that Joanna and johanna and things like that are nice if you don't want Joan which does seem a bit plain maybe? There is an unusual name jonquil I've heard before. Which could be shortened. I think Joni on its own is fine though. I do think trying to avoid every word that can be a possible product or sounds like is a losing game. Unless it's really well known and everywhere or something very rude that kids will be horrid about I'd be inclined not to listen to every association people say on forums. It's endless otherwise.

If you like Juliet you could use that, or Juliette as the spelling. Or there's Julianne. Or what about Jill or Jillian?

Zoomer122 · 04/06/2022 13:44

What about Jeanie I feel like that is quite similar to Joanie but has a slightly different feel to it.
I love the name Josephine and I don’t think you have to worry about the nickname Jo because there are so many other options like Josie or Jose or Phenie.what about Ellen or Edith with the nn edie or Ellie

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/06/2022 13:40

You could have Joanna nn Joni or Joanie?

Joan and Joanna are the same name (feminines of John), but Joanna is nicer.

I like June

Merryclaire · 04/06/2022 11:23

Thanks for the suggestions - I like Bonnie, Daphne, Jessa, Lena, Mabel, Nora, Sylvie, and Sadie.

I suppose my tastes are fairly traditional - but don’t want it to sound too unfashionable old lady (I know these things come round in cycles) or overly frilly.

I think Joanie is just about ok on that sense and a bit more popular now, but even though they’re close, I’m not keen on Jean, Jackie etc.

I like the Joni spelling but apparently it’s also a period product brand and when I’ve searched it on other threads, people point out that it’s too close to Yoni (which means vagina)! So those things put me off!

DH definitely likes the Joni Mitchell link.

It’s so hard to find anything else that he will consider!

I know a Nancy-Jean which I think is fab.

Fivebeanchilli · 04/06/2022 11:03

If someone told me they had called their daughter "Joanie" I would assume the spelling was Joni - I've met a few over the years and Joni Mitchell has made that a mainstream spelling.
I think Josephine nowadays would be shortened to Josie rather than Jo.
Joni and June have a retro 50s feel to me. How about:
Mary
Sally
Susan
Deborah
Greta
Ellen
Sarah

blameitonthecaffeine · 04/06/2022 10:01

I much prefer the spelling Joni. Well recognised due to Joni Mitchell and looks like a name in it's own right whereas Joanie looks like a cutesy nickname for Joan which I think is old lady rather than old lady chic tbh.

Not keen on June. Love Juliet

I don't know whether your style is old fashioned/retro or cool/quirky. Joni and June kind of sit in the middle. Ummm, how about:

Avis, April, Aphra, Astrid, Bronte, Bonnie, Bess, Betsy, Cora, Coco, Daphne, Diana, Esme, Edith, Flora, Gloria, Hazel, Hetty, Ida, Inez, Judy, Jocelyn, Joyce, Jonna, Jamie, Jessa, Kezzie, Kelly, Lorna, Laurel, Lena, Lennie, Lois, Maeve, Mabel, Maude, Mavis, Mimi, Nina, Nora, Nell, Nancy, Opal, Pearl, Polly, Penny, Ruby, Rita, Rosa, Rhona, Ramona, Sylvie, Susie, Sadie, Tessa, Tara, Thalia, Una, Vera, Veda, Verity, Viola, Willa, Winnie, Yvette, Zelda
