Don't be upset @WeasilyPleased , you asked for opinions and got some.

Re culture, I'd find siblings with very different names a bit strange. I'd think nothing of siblings with names from the same language, e.g. Carys & Ffion/Huw, but Carys & Eliza/Sven have such a different vibe.

I know someone with a German/scandi type first name (not Sven but something along those lines) and he gets asked an awful lot if he's half Swedish. His parents just liked the name

I know someone with a 'Fionnuala spelt differently' name and lots of people misspell it including her relatives. She's known by a nn

WeasilyPleased · 06/06/2022 23:30

Well thank you for the reasonable replies and I know Im hormonal but I got very upset being judged

  1. For choosing names inappropriate to my culture. See previous post as I have not.
  2. Misspelled dh's aunt's actual name with that actual spelling.
There really are some trolls just gagging to put you down on here.

In my opinion people look rather stupid using name from other cultures. Just like if she named her child Sven, Enrique or Ramesh.

Or Margaret or Penelope or Miriam or Ingrid or Joshua or Felix or Marcus or Atticus. All their parents looking rather stupid...

....................
I do think the standard spelling Fionnuala is better than a misspelling, though.

I agree with @ahwobabob , @mathanxiety , and Margaret or Penelope or Miriam or Ingrid or Joshua or Felix or Marcus or Atticus are not closely linked to a certain culture, language or religion

jadey1991 · 06/06/2022 04:42

Boys
Adam - don't like
Alistair -don't like
Abraham (Bram)
Daniel- okay
Rufus - don't like
Edwin- don't like

Girls
Eliza (worried about her being called Ellie)- like
Zadie- it's okay
Sylvia - don't like
Tasmin ( not Tamsin) - like
Finnuala -don't like
Robyn- like

What about reign for a girl
Josiah for a boy

mamaneedsanap33 · 06/06/2022 04:21

Not keen on any of your boys names sorry! Robyn is beautiful though, seems to be having a revival lately and the Y spelling is gorgeous too. Makes it more feminine in my opinion. Also goes well with Carys.

whattodo2019 · 05/06/2022 23:42

Abraham (Bram) - ???? what??? NO
Daniel - no
Rufus - ok
Edwin - hideous

Girls
Eliza (worried about her being called Ellie) - yea, i've never heard Ellie as a non
Zadie - umm not really
Sylvia - OMG you must joking!!
Tasmin ( not Tamsin)- NO however Tamsin is lovely
Finnuala - NO
Robyn -NO

I'm afraid i really don't like your name choices

WeasilyPleased · 05/06/2022 22:50

So sorry you think I'm stupid @ahwobabob. My dh has an Irish granny, cousins, uncles and aunts, one of which spells her name as I have spelt it. It's where we got the idea from.
Maybe you should ask about heritage before making yourself look stupid.
For the record, ours includes English Welsh Irish Scottish Swiss and Swedish so by your reckoning we could have Amanda, Mabli, Aine, Morven, Heidi or Astrid!

I have a Silvia and no one has ever called her Silv. She gets called Silvia or Silvie.

ahwobabob · 05/06/2022 10:31

mathanxiety · 02/06/2022 23:35

Sure she could, as long as she spells it right.

In my opinion people look rather stupid using name from other cultures. Just like if she named her child Sven, Enrique or Ramesh.

blameitonthecaffeine · 03/06/2022 15:18

Adam - very solid. Can't really go wrong with it. Suitable for all ages and places.
Alistair - like it. Make me think Scottish and 1990s but those aren't bad things!
Abraham (Bram) - Not so keen on Abraham. Bram is cool. Bram Stoker link?
Daniel - like Adam but a bit more 'now'. Fine.
Rufus - cool. Does kind of make think of a dog's name but I quite like it.
Edwin - prefer Edward but nothing against Edwin.

Eliza (worried about her being called Ellie) - there are 'El' names I like much better but it's fine and I don't think it's a natural candidate for Ellie.
Zadie - love this. Cool and quirky. Also love Sadie.
Sylvia - elegant and pretty. Maybe a bit old lady. Sylvie is a cute nickname.
Tasmin ( not Tamsin) - sounds a bit odd but that might be because my brain is trying to make it Tamsin.
Finnuala - I've seen so many spellings and pronunciations of this that I'm confused. The only one I've ever know was Fionnuala (said Fin-ooo-luh) which I like. But not sure it that's the same name.
Robyn - love it.

I don't love any of your boys names but think I would go with Adam as first choice.
For girls I'm torn between Zadie and Robyn but think Robyn is the better match for Carys.

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/06/2022 08:30

If you want to misspell it, wouldn't Finola be simpler?

mathanxiety · 02/06/2022 23:35

Sure she could, as long as she spells it right.

ahwobabob · 02/06/2022 22:51

Is that meant to be "fionnuala?" Not sure you can get away with using that name unless you're Irish...

Shmithecat2 · 02/06/2022 22:31

I love Daniel, like Finnuala, don't like the rest.

Hazelnuttree · 02/06/2022 22:29

Carys is beautiful.

Adam - ok, bit meh
Alistair - ok
Abraham (Bram) - awful
Daniel - ok
Rufus - like
Edwin - nope

How about - Aidan, Fraser, Reuben, Bryn?

Eliza - bit dowdy, loads of Ellas, Ellies, Eleanors around
Zadie - like, reminds me of Zadie Smith
Sylvia - love
Tasmin - dislike, and will be called Tamsin all the time
Finnuala - awful
Robyn - like Robin, perhaps slightly dated though

How about - Jasmine, Serena, Sabrina, Nia, Erica, Erin, Ffion, Fern, Rowan?

KayEmAy · 02/06/2022 18:39

Love the name Carys!

Boys
Adam - strong, classic, great name
Alistair- I'm not a fan personally
Abraham (Bram) - I like Bram on it's own!
Daniel- Great name, love
Rufus- eh
Edwin - Love the nn Win!

Girls
Eliza (worried about her being called Ellie) - Love the name Eliza, I would have the exact same concern
Zadie - cute
Sylvia - I don't understand the hype on this one
Tasmin ( not Tamsin)- Tas is a cute nn
Finnuala - just go Finn
Robyn - I like it! I may like Raven more

AnnaSW1 · 02/06/2022 17:28

The only one I like is Adam. I think it's a great name

SpaceJamtart · 02/06/2022 17:26

I really like Daniel and Adam, nice easily spelt names.
Abraham and Alistair are fine, but seem a bit weird with your daughters name

Not a fan of Rufus and Edwin, they sound drippy

And Eliza and Zadie are really nice too, and fit with your big feisty women vibe,
the only shortening I have seen Eliza's get is Liza

Fivebeanchilli · 02/06/2022 17:25

Carys and...

Adam - lovely. Solid, attractive, known but not popular. Goes really well with Carys.
Alistair - ditto but I slightly prefer it as I really love Ali as a nn
Abraham (Bram) - I don't like this. Feels a very big name
Daniel - sorry but I find this such a dull name
Rufus - probably my favourite boys' name. I think it could be slightly matchy but I've tried saying it a few times and I think it's ok
Edwin - ok. A bit meh

Eliza (worried about her being called Ellie) - gorgeous and I don't think you need to worry about Ellie with that name
Zadie - I like Sadie but Zadie is too associated with the author. Sadie is much prettier in my view
Sylvia - ok. I prefer Sylvie
Tasmin ( not Tamsin) - not keen
Finnuala - really not keen
Robyn - ok

I would go for Rufus or Alistair and Eliza but it would be a hard pick between Eliza and Sadie if that was on your list because Sadie sounds lovely with Carys

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 02/06/2022 17:22

Adam - really like, surprisingly under used imo as a teacher.
Alistair - don't like.
Abraham - love, tried to convince DH of this one with ds2 but he vetoed.
Daniel - this is fine, nothing bad about it. Average.
Rufus - I want to like it but don't. I did teach a lovely Rufus once though, as a positive.
Edwin - really like.

Eliza - very nice, not heard it shortened to Ellie, that's usually Eleanor.
Zadie - love!
Sylvia - love this too.
Tasmin - it's ok.
Finnuala - not a fan
Robyn - like this too. Unusual.

Suggestions: Abel, Rupert, Tamara, Elizabeth, Zara.

DogsAndGin · 02/06/2022 17:15

Adam - it’s ok. Very dull
Alistair - it’s ok but the name of a middle aged man
Abraham (Bram) - Bram = Dracula
Daniel - nice but boring
Rufus - yes!
Edwin - yes!

Eliza - love it as a nn for Elizabeth
Zadie - no
Sylvia - old lady
Tasmin ( not Tamsin) - awful ugly name
Finnuala - awful!!
Robyn - it’s okay. Very masculine.
