For a boy…
which do you prefer & why

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
chairbae · 02/06/2022 13:53

Names evolve and in a few years Louie may be the standard version used in the UK.

That's takes decades & with the likes of Prince Louis I would argue it will go the other way.

RobynNora · 02/06/2022 13:50

Love both.

Both very popular names but popular for good reason.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/06/2022 13:44

Hate Jude, plus it is everywhere atm.
Louis is nice. Not Louie though!

Cuckoo48 · 02/06/2022 13:42

Definitely Jude. It's a simple strong name along the lines of Jack, Josh and Jake but less commonly used.

Don't love Louis as a name anyway, but there's nothing to hate. However I really dislike it spelt as Louie. I get your reasoning but you asked for mine.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 13:36

Someone I know has a Jorja. I wince when I see it written down.

Louis could always be Louie as a nn, if spelling is an issue e.g. living in Missouri.

stacestation · 02/06/2022 13:27

Agree @DuchessOfSausage Deborah has remained the classic.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 13:18

It's more likely to be like Deborah and Debra, where Debra is very dated but Deborah is a classic

stacestation · 02/06/2022 13:17

Names evolve and in a few years Louie may be the standard version used in the UK

I don't think that will happen.

Plus, a few years would be extremely unlikely, if you look at the general movement of names within the stats and their movements and the time that takes.

pinklavenders · 02/06/2022 13:05

They're practically neck-and-neck, there's very little in it. There were only 18 more babies registered as Louie.

It will certainly be easier to teach that spelling to a young boy. Only in French would the S not be pronounced normally.

PostMenPatWithACat · 02/06/2022 12:46

Any name for any child shoukd be spelled correctly. Naming a child Louie instead of Louis is on a par with naming a girl Joolie instead of Julie.

As others have said Jude makes me think of Jude the Obscure and it's a sad tale.

He may not thank you for Louie when he's grown up op and has had to take on board numerous comments about the incorrect spelling of his name.

ChagSameachDoreen · 02/06/2022 12:41

Louis.

Jude reminds me of the yellow stars Jews had to wear.

stacestation · 02/06/2022 12:39

The latest stats (from 2021) won't be available just yet.

From 2020:
They're practically neck-and-neck, there's very little in it. There were only 18 more babies registered as Louie. These are both names high in the top 100, so there's 1000+ registrations of both. Will be interested to see the newer figures.

ancientgran · 02/06/2022 12:39

The only Jude I know is a woman whose given name is Judith so I associate it as a woman's name. I like Louis, like someone else I see Louie and think Donald Duck.

jlm122 · 02/06/2022 12:31

@SundayTeatime phonetically spell out each variation for me then? Show me the great difference

There is no phonetic difference. That doesn’t make it the same name - just as Julia isn’t the same as Joolya.

stacestation · 02/06/2022 12:33

chairbae · 02/06/2022 12:07

Louie is more popular than Louis for boys in the UK

since when though?

Surely not Shock

Has anyone checked the accuracy of this? If not I will.

Only five years.. OP asked a question and instead of answering is getting a lot of pedantic replies about the way she'd chose to spell the name. Maybe I'm dense but it is the exact same name just spelt a different way

It isn’t the same name, though. One is long-standing, traditional, used for centuries, royal, classic, the name of famous people all over the world. The other…isn’t.

jlm122 · 02/06/2022 12:24

stacestation · 02/06/2022 12:18

OP didn't ask about the spelling she asked about the name

You haven't been here long I take it 😅

People offer lots of advice, or pick up on points, not asked about, or thought of, in the OP. They often find it helpful!

chairbae · 02/06/2022 12:14

Maybe it's area dependent?

chairbae · 02/06/2022 12:13

My brother is Louis, never an issue with his name. Any name can be misspelt or read wrong but that's not a reflection on the name.

JeansAndJumper · 02/06/2022 12:12

To me Jude is a girl name, even though I know that's not the case. And I know several Male Judes aged 6-15. But still I can't get on board with it, so for me I'd choose Louie. (Well, Louis personally but I understand your logic OP).

pinklavenders · 02/06/2022 12:12

I wouldn't agree that there is any doubt with the pronunciation of Louis

You can choose to disagree. But that doesn't mean it's true Grin

chairbae · 02/06/2022 12:11

I don't understand the narrative that no one in England is called Louis & Louie is more popular?

Spell it how you want but most people understand Louis is Louis

chairbae · 02/06/2022 12:10

"Further back in history, Louis appeared in the top 100 baby names in both 1904 and 1914, in 78th and 79th place respectively."
