I don't like Spencer at all, I was going to say it seems wet to me, but a PP summed it up better as an 80s wide boy.

Vince I wouldn't even contemplate. I could expand but doubt it would mean that much to anyone, kind of like Swiss Toni off The Fast Show.

Similar to Frank, I had Franc on my short list but didn't have a boy.

same, the beauty of Frank to me is it’s simplicity, extending it to Franklin ruins it.

My great grandfather was Francis, known as Frank. His eldest son was Francis, known as Frankie.

Not keen on any if the names tbh.
John was of the time - much nicer imo.

Spencer to me is the twat from Made In Chelsea married to that annoying model who's always in Hello because she's managed to get pregnant again.

Frank is DCI Burnside from The Bill, whom I wouldn't have turned down so not sure I could name my child after him.

Vincent is OK but makes me think of b&w horror films or Pulp Fiction.
Spencer is a horrible, weedy name.

I think traditionally Frank is a shortening of Francis, not a classic on its own. Spencer sounds eighties to me - I have no idea why! No very keen on either. Vincent's a surname in my extended family, but I do quite like it as a first name.

Frank can be short for Francis, but it's a name in its name in its own right (and is thought to be on older name than Francis). Frank was more popular than Francis in England and Wales up until 1944, so using Frank as a standalone name is arguably more traditional.

I'm baffled by such strong feelings for Frank here. Though I was also surprised by the strength of feeling against Walter recently, so clearly I'm not in touch with MN view on this era boys names.

I quite like Frank. It's quite manly. I see it in the same bracket as John, Peter, Bill, Bob - it's comforting in a kind of grandadish way.

I don't like Spencer. Ok there's Spencer Tracy I suppose, but personally I would bundle it with 80s wide-boy names like Wayne and Darren. I'd expect him to have highlights and drive a Ford Escort.

I do like Vincent / Vince. Sounds artistic / sensitive (think I'm thinking of V VGogh).

Spencer is s good strong name.

Spencer George or Spencer James are nice.

Of those names I would choose Spencer, just dont call him Frank Spencer Bloggs, that would be cruelty.

It's just such an ugly, harsh sounding name. It's the "ank" that does it. It's just so unpleasant sounding.

Spencer is quite a different vibe, I’m not a fan of surnames as first names personally.

I agree OP, I don’t understand people saying it is terrible and ugly. I could understand dated, or boring, names won’t appeal to everyone, but I just don’t get what people see is so horrible about Frank! But it doesn’t surprise me as I have seen it get a similar reception in the past

Frank was my favourite but after reading all these comments. I see it as a solid classic name.
