There's a logic about how those slowly evolved, though. Margaret - Meg - Peg.

There are no hard-and-fast rules about nicknames and diminutives.

Ted is a diminutive for Edward. Peggy is a diminutive for Margaret.

If you want to name him Robert and call him Ernie then go for it.
