Is Dahlia a nice name?

Hi all,

I found out I'm having a little girl today and we already named her before we knew and we've settled on Dahlia (Dah-Lia like the black Dahlia) Patricia Smith (not real last name but just as common).

But my DH is saying he like Dahlia-Rose but I think Dahlia is quite strong on its own but I'm not sure. I'm just questioning whether I actually think it's a nice name because originally I thought it was quite uncommon but not too unusual ..

What do you ladies (and men) think?

It's pronounced DAY - LEE - UH

But it can be pronounced Dah-Lia which is what we were thinking of

It's weird how you mention Black Dahlia as that's not a good thing I'd want connected.

I was just explaining how to pronounce it as I know people pronounce the flowers differently.

I’m not sure. It’s a really pretty name, and dahlias are super popular as flowers these days; but I guess the Black Dahlia and Bertie Wooster’s Aunt Dahlia aren’t great associations.

Then again, the importance of supposedly negative associations with baby names is often overstated on here, I think. Most people come to “own” their names so that kind of thing isn’t important.

That's what I was thinking because my mind goes to the black Dahlia first before the flowers but there's plenty of Jacks around so l think like you say people make their names their own so I'm thinking it might be okay.

No.

It's a nice name. I imagine if her first name was Dahlia-Rose most people would just call her Dahlia. Plus I'm not keen on sticking two names together to be one first name.

I like Dahlia. Don’t think it goes with Patricia though

Just think how many times your daughter will have to correct the spelling or failed pronunciation. Be kind and choose a different name.

That's already happened with my sons name and his isn't unusual so
