My husband and I have pretty much decided our baby boy will be Wilf. However, I made the mistake of reading some threads with opinions on the name and have read a lot of negative reactions to the name which has knocked our confidence with it! Can I ask for anybody with positive associations with the name to share them. I don’t need to hear the negative thoughts again! Thank you 😊

Wilfred (of which I imagine most go by Wilf) is an inoffensive, reasonably popular name. But I echo the sentiments of those upthread, you need to like the name. No name is universally liked and if you can’t cope with reading honest reactions of a name when you looked for them, maybe the name isn’t for you.

@AvocadoAndToast yes, same💕

I know a young Wilf. The name never struck me as odd at all tbh. He's a lovely boy and makes me laugh

jacquettalux · 22/05/2022 22:33

I really like it. No idea why it's getting so many negative comments.

It's simple, easy to spell, classic hut not overused. To me, its a name that has quiet strength. I prefer it as a standalone name rather than short for Wilfred. Wilfred has a fancier, try hard feel, in my opinion!

frostytimes · 22/05/2022 22:32

I love it and know a (very attractive) adult named Wilf, who was also a popular and attractive teenager and I'm assuming cute toddler. I've never heard of negativity and have no bad a associations, it's just a normal name 🤷‍♀️

AvocadoAndToast · 22/05/2022 22:32

It reminds me of a popular MNer’s lovely son from back in the day when the site was smaller and posters were more ‘known’ 😊.

Whydothat · 22/05/2022 22:29

I love it. I know an older and a toddler Wilf and it works well across all ages.

RaininSummer · 22/05/2022 22:28

I like it. I would go for the full Wilfred though then shorten.

Bobbins36 · 22/05/2022 22:28

Love it. I know a lovely young adult called Wilf, none of his peers think the name remotely out of the ordiNary. If yours turns out like him he’ll be doing well 👍

alphons · 22/05/2022 22:28

It’s a bit odd asking for people to tell you your choice is a good one. It’s your child. He’s hardly going to come back onto MN as a teenager/grown man and berate us for giving him that name, is he 🤔That’s going to be all on you.

SunshinePie · 22/05/2022 22:26

Wilf is cute! I think it was in my kids book she read this morning (Biff and Chip). What is it short for?

Lavenderlast · 22/05/2022 22:25

I like it.

Some people see it as a slang word but that slang will be out of use by the time your little Wilf is old enough to care.

Sorry that a bunch of trolls ignored your request for positivity and tried to bring you down. Sigh.

ofwarren · 22/05/2022 22:22

I like it
I'd use the full name Wilfred though

starlingsintheslipstream · 22/05/2022 22:22

It's a perfectly nice name. I think of Wilf Mott from Dr Who. He's one of my favourite characters.

RuthW · 22/05/2022 22:22

Wilfred is one of my favourite names.

Trafficjamlog · 22/05/2022 22:21

If you like it then you won’t care what other people think. Everyone will have a different opinion and I think it’s a hideous name but it’s your child and you like it so that’s all that matters

Stripyhoglets1 · 22/05/2022 22:19

It's a popular name now so I think there will be several Wilfs as your son grows up - it won't be an unusual name anymore iyswim

Wilf is quite a cute name for a toddler. But you have to picture the full life of the name. Teenage Wilf? Grown-up professional Wilf?

I also know a grown up professional Wilf. Short for Wilfred. Never batted an eyelid at the name, it suits him. It's a nice name.

MiddleParking · 22/05/2022 22:17

I know a grown up successful professional fit as fuck Wilf. Don’t know if that helps on the baby name front.

Imnotahippo · 22/05/2022 22:14

I used to have a great uncle wilf-it’s cute for a tot
the unmumsymum called her youngest wilf-i think her other two are Henry & Jude

Anotherdayanotherdisappointment · 22/05/2022 22:12

Will and Wilma from the Biff, Chip and Kipper books.

SleepymrsE · 22/05/2022 22:11

I have a very nearly 8 year old Wilfred (Wilf) - named after my grandad. We’ve never had any negative comments from anyone.

rattlemehearties · 22/05/2022 22:11

PurpleandPlatinum · 22/05/2022 22:09

I like it. I know a Wilf who is 6. Never thought anything about it other than it’s a cute name.

Topseyt123 · 22/05/2022 22:09

I like it. Nothing to do with Boris having a son with the name.

Wilfred is a nice name and Wilf is a nice shortening. I'd consider it.
