I'm in australia and have seen it as a nn for Kylie
Could use as nn for Michaela

Marty13 · 25/05/2022 02:46

I think Kai is a lovely name, @Cryingintherain99 I like it for both girls and boys. Lovely sound.

OP, if you want a longer name, how about Kaileigh/Kayleigh or Kaiden/Kayden ? Or Kaicey ? But Kai is fine too.

I don't like it... But I don't like Kai for a boy either. It's trendy and will probably seem time-stamped in the future.

I know a Kai born in 1989. It has been around a while.

Alstoybarn · 25/05/2022 00:35

I was gonna say no but then read the comments and saw khai 😍really like that for a girl, spelling especially

Oh no, it’s v… how do I say this tactfully… déclassé

Friends would be Lacey-May and Taylor…

On balance, I think it would be much more preferable to be thought of as "déclassé" rather than this pretentious twattery.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2022 00:23

I think it's fine as a nn for a girl, not as a full name. Kaia is ok.

Someone came on a while ago to complain about her daughter wanting to change her name (Cody) because her daughter was fed up with having a boys name. I don't think it would be fair as a full name.

LadyCatStark · 22/05/2022 23:15

I know a Kyra who gets called Ky.

I thought that too, but I know someone personally called Kaia so wouldn’t be able too. Still looking for another name that kai could be used as a NN for

Kylie Grin

A boy's name, and one from.a few years ago - the Kevin of its time.
There are some gorgeous girls' names - why give her a naff boys' one.

calmlakes · 22/05/2022 19:44

It is a fairly normal name for perfectly respectable Asian boys in my part of the world.
I would be surprised to see a girl called Kai though.
Maybe Kailani instead?

User3568975431146 · 22/05/2022 19:43

Definitely a boys name I'm afraid.

StopStartStop · 22/05/2022 19:41

Taught a Kai years ago, spelt Kye, I think. Kai like that is Michael Gothard.

Yogagrandmum · 22/05/2022 19:38

Horrid

LadyEloise1 · 22/05/2022 19:37

How do you pronounce Kai ?

I had a mental breakdown when he was a baby over negativity of his name.
He was so ill at the time and fighting for his life, yet people still pulled apart the name I chose for him.
I came so close to changing his name back then, and reading this has dug up all those feelings, and 11 years later I'm thinking should I have change it?
He loves his name and so do I, but my mental health is rubbish.

Honestly, it's a perfectly lovely name and I'm sure he's a gorgeous boy.

People on this board talk quite plainly about the names they don't like and why. but I'm sure all our names have received a negative (and a positive) review on here. I know mine has! Smile There's no one name that meets with universal approval. And Kai is quite a popular name so lots of people agree with you!

There's no point letting an inconsequential MN thread effect your mood when you're not in the best place. Go give your Kai a cuddle Flowers

Have to say Kailani is gorgeous. I'd be surprised by Kai as a girls' name but no reason why not.

thingymaboob · 22/05/2022 18:29

Boys name

hattie43 · 22/05/2022 18:22

I only know it as a boys name

starlingdarling · 22/05/2022 18:22

PeterpiperpickedapeckofpickledPEPPAS · 22/05/2022 18:18

Don’t give her the middle name Moana and it’s probably ok.

🤣 I spent two years in New Zealand about 15 years ago and Kai moana is one of the few Māori phrases I still remember

Kai alone also makes me think of Colleen and Wayne Rooney's son.

IncompleteSenten · 22/05/2022 18:20

What about Keziah and nickname Kai or whatever she'd end up being nicknamed at school?

PeterpiperpickedapeckofpickledPEPPAS · 22/05/2022 18:18

Don’t give her the middle name Moana and it’s probably ok.

ShowOfHands · 22/05/2022 18:14

I know two Kais, both male and interestingly, one does have a brother called Taylor! Other has a sister called Ellé-Mai.

It does have quite a negative association on here and is always lumped in with unique spellings and socioeconomic assumptions. It's a shame because I like the sound and simplicity.

I wouldn't use it for a girl on its own but as a nickname, I quite like it.

MrsMop1964 · 22/05/2022 18:07

I onyl know 2 Kais. One is a dancer on Strictly and the other is a kpop star from the group EXO; both are male
