Help!!!! Girls name - Lydia or Verity?

plzhelpmepickaname · 19/05/2022 14:54

Our baby girl is due soon, and we're really stuck on either Verity or Lydia as a name.

Middle name is likely to be Grace or Jane (although I'm not overly keen on Verity Grace - too many virtue names in one name!)

Looking to gauge opinions on which one people like best?

PS, before it comes up, yes I do know there are words that rhyme with these names, and no, I'm not concerned about that :)

I think both names are pretty, but given they are quite unusual, I'm now thinking, is the reason they are unusual because no one likes them?? 😂

Please help!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

Lydia is a beautiful name. Verity is not.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/05/2022 00:17

Both gorgeous and elegant imo. Lydia is slightly more classic but Verity just pips it for me - I don't usually care about a name meaning as such but Verity's is obvious and lovely to me. The rhyming thing with Lydia does perhaps also put me off very slightly as kids can find sex related things funny - where as I never would have even thought of "Ferrety" as an insult by kids (I've heard "Rat, Dog" etc as an insult but comparisons to Ferrets? Confused)

Oh and both Lydia Jane and Verity Jane are lovely - she could be Lydie, LJ ; Vee or VJ. Grace is has become very "token middle name" now unfortunately.

KayEmAy · 20/05/2022 14:48

I like them both but if I only had one vote, Verity :)

That being said if you wanted to not choose, I think Lydia Verity flows really well!

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 20/05/2022 13:35

Of the two, I prefer Lydia. It's classic and very elegant.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 20/05/2022 13:26

(I still love the name.)

honestogod · 20/05/2022 11:14

My DD2 is Verity, and I love it to be honest. We are definitely not public school and not a ballet shoe in sight, she prefers football. It gets shortened to V quite a lot, and also Ettie just evolved for us as a family nn. She's mostly Verity though. Middle names Helena Ruth. Also love Lydia though! I ruled it out in the end because couldn't rid myself of an awful rhyming thing from my era, throwing/having a 'flyd' (dreadful, nobody would know of it today at sure)

If popularity is a concern for you, and you are in England and Wales, then you need the Dark Greener site. Lydia was a top fifty name about 25 years ago, and is still moderately popular. Verity has never been a top hundred name.

Tesoroxx · 20/05/2022 11:10

I have a Verity but she gets Vee, still love her name years later, Lydia was also on the list but dh wasn't as keen.

TitoMojito · 20/05/2022 11:07

Lydia definitely.

RuthW · 20/05/2022 11:05

Verity is much nicer

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 20/05/2022 10:54

I am biased because I have a Lydia.
I would have chosen Verity for her sister had it not been the name of her best friend!
I don't know any younger Lydia's and only know one Verity under the age of 40.
They are both beautiful names.

Classica · 20/05/2022 10:44

I prefer Lydia.

Verity is a very sharp sound and belongs to a prim and proper 1950s prefect.

BonjourCrisette · 20/05/2022 10:31

Lydia Jane 100%. Lydia is an under-used classic IMO.

Verity is nice but much more 'of the moment' than Lydia and I think it will date quite a lot. Grace has been a very popular middle name for decades. I think Jane is a lot fresher.

KangarooKenny · 20/05/2022 08:05

Lydia is much nicer.

plzhelpmepickaname · 20/05/2022 08:03

@Twizbe "Berity" 😂😂😂 brilliant, I mean it wouldn't put me off, it's actually kind of adorable, my DD went to playgroup with an Elodie (which I think is a beautiful name) who she called Eddy for about a year. 3 year olds!! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Not sure if this will sway you. There's a Verity in my daughter's class. None of them can say it and all call her Berity .... they're 3 so this won't last for ever though.

plzhelpmepickaname · 20/05/2022 07:32

I'm laughing at some of the responses, thanks so much everyone, I think both of them are a bit marmite and you're gonna get some people who really dislike one of them. It's so funny how some names you just think, ugh yuk no 😂 Interesting that Lydia is so popular I actually thought it would be the other way around. Also hadn't thought about the L names similar to Lydia so that's a thought. I am cracking up about Grace as a middle name, my DH is not keen on that so maybe we will rethink ... I think people are right though, it's probably up there with May/Mae and Rose as a middle name. I reckon we could probably come up with something more original!!

Lydia Jane is beautiful. I dislike Verity intensely.

jammyrose · 19/05/2022 19:30

I really like Lydia, not keen on Verity.

RaininSummer · 19/05/2022 19:16

I love Verity.

bigbluebus · 19/05/2022 19:10

I know two Lydias. One was at school with DS so will be 25, the other is a neighbour who I'm guessing is late 30's.
I've only ever heard of one Verity who will be a teenager now and she was definitely not posh or middle class.
I like Lydia Grace as a 1st choice and Verity Jane as a 2nd choice.

DarleneSnell · 19/05/2022 19:08

Definitely Lydia, love it. Cute on a child and classy on a young woman. Lydi is a great nickname.

Can't stand Verity, it's one of my hated names. Lol.

Blarting · 19/05/2022 19:05

Verity is beautiful 😍

AnnaSW1 · 19/05/2022 19:05

Lydia is so much better

Sistanotcista · 19/05/2022 19:02

I was at school with a Lydia. Everyone called her “Lydi-whore”. My school was not a nice place though, so that experience may not be replicated. I have never known a Verity, but I think it’s very pretty.
