Me and my partner have already decided on the name for one of our twin boys and he’s going to be called Ambrose.

we wanted opinions on which name for a bother would go best and we’re open for suggestions, on our list so far we have

Balthazar
Magnus
Oswald
Thaddeus
Solomon

Many Thanks

Gus isn't a nickname or shortened name for Magnus anymore than Bram is short for Ambrose Confused

Let's hear what your DH thought of Thaddeus?

I know a Magnus who goes by Gus, so while it isn't traditional it is used. If you say Magnus out loud (at least the English pronunciation) it makes perfect sense to me?

Honestly, previous generations got Peggy from Margaret and Polly from Mary, and now people get their knickers in a twist if the nn isn't neatly contained within the full name.

Not arguing btw, I just find it genuinely interesting how we're much less creative and more literal with shortenings these days!

We’ve decided on Magnus and Ambrose now and my husband didn’t really like Thaddeus in his word the nickname Thad sounded too much like Thud

I love Ambrose. I am a great fan of E J Oxenham’s Abbey Girls books in which Ambrose is a wise and saintly monk whose history is gradually uncovered.

Crispynoodle · 28/05/2022 16:14

Ambrose and either Raphael or Rafferty Bram and Raffy

How bizarre!! DBro is Ambrose and my sister or I would have been Clovis if we’d been boys.

😀

IrisVersicolor · 28/05/2022 14:54

I would do Solomon and Balthazar from your list. Ambrose sounds like a slightly pompous stuffed toy. See also Monty.

I think Ambrose and Magnus work best.

Clovis came to mind. It’s used in France, he was the first King of the Franks.

Ambrose to Bram is weird.
The ones I know were never given that nick name at school.

I like Magnus on your list , and I think it goes with Ambrose; which I also like.

That’s a good I idea to have Ned as a nn

were going to decide who’s who when they’re born

It's often suggested that the twin born second gets the name that comes first alphabetically so they don't always come second.

mathanxiety · 19/05/2022 16:13

I know one Ambrose under age four and two aged between four and twelve.

It's not an outlandish name.

Siblings of the ones I know are Evelyn, Lucy, Constance, Phineas, James, and Lucas. The families are all RC.

mathanxiety · 19/05/2022 16:09

...thing is if you call him Ambrose but he's known as Bram he's going to spend his whole life explaining that?

This is a weird and really far-fetched proposition.

I have a BC name which is not the name I'm known by. It's not at all an impediment to any aspect of my life.

"Pleased to meet you, X, I'm Ambrose Surname, call me Bram". End of conversation on the topic of names.
