Hi!
Partner is Danish and we'd like to give our new little one (yet to arrive) a Danish name.
Have looked up the common ones but nothing has stood out. Thanks :-)

Ket-chya maybe is more accurate for Katja.

newstart1234 · 30/05/2022 19:57

Elin become il-eeen,
Elina become il-eena,
Katje becomes Ket-ya,

In danish, I think

CallItLoneliness · 27/05/2022 09:13

Does Elin or Elina work in Danish for a girl? Love both those names, but I will be working off the Finnish/Swedish pronounciation, which isn't toooooo too bad in English. Also Katja?

ThatshallotBaby · 27/05/2022 06:00

I love Inge. But it may be Norwegian.

prettybird · 26/05/2022 21:12

For a girl, Elsa (my granny's name). Or my dad's cousin's name: Inga.

Boys: Pieter, Karl (think it's actually Carol bit that could be problematic in this country. Wink)

PatsyJStone · 26/05/2022 20:55

Read all these & think I've got one not been mentioned, I worked with a Steen.
Love that, and Karsten.
Also Jonas - pronounced Yonas
Ole... not sure if the spelling. (Boy)

I'd have thought for a girl Sofie would have been suggested by several people.

Too many Sofie relatives! Sadly!

some suggestions: studentsoftheworld.info/penpals/stats.php?Pays=DNK

Pick a name you like. If you deliberately use a name like Freya no one will realise the danish connection and half her family will pronounce it the danish way and the other half the english way, which isn't ideal

Thanks for that link, very fun.

I love how Yoda sneaks into the top 100 in Germany.

InkySquid · 24/05/2022 11:50

Perhaps there just aren't that many Danish names workable in English?

I think it's probably true, I can see that to a non-native speaker there looks to be lots of options but they tend to either
a) look identical or very similar to known names in English names but have different pronunciations, i.e. Magnus/Charlotte/Freya
b) have sounds that most British people will struggle to pronounce, e.g. Tove, Dorthe - I know how these names sound in my head but I can't make my mouth make the right sound!

Lightningrain · 24/05/2022 11:11

Most Danish people I’ve come across don’t seem to have had Nordic style names although I do know a Marcel.

For girls
Pia
Tove (I know its more Swedish but I love Tove Janssons books)
Merete
Bodil
Astrid

For boys
Erasmus (Rasmus)
Kim
Lars
Gustaf
Konrad

LOVE Bodil, but not brave enough!
