A week to go and still unable to agree on a name.

Are Hector and Magnus too pretentious?

what other names are similar?

Neither are pretentious, in fact both getting popular. I much prefer Hector.

Kester, Linus, Angus, Rufus, Edgar, Silas, Marcus, Matthias, Barnabas, Walter, Ivor, Amos, Oscar, Alistair seem similar names

cafedesreves · 17/05/2022 19:53

Fergus, Douglas?

SpeedofaSloth · 17/05/2022 18:22

Angus.

justasking111 · 17/05/2022 18:13

Knowing a three year old Hector I am biased but Magnus is lovely too..

itssquidstella · 17/05/2022 18:08

I’m due on Sunday and DS will be Magnus. So half of me would like to tell you what a fantastic name it is and you should definitely choose it, but the other half of me says YOU CAN'T USE IT NYAH NYAH.

Hector was also on our list! Both fab names :)

Puffalicious · 17/05/2022 18:07

Magnus is great.

Similar in feel: Struan, Lauchlan/ Lachlan, Fergus, Murdo, Innes, Angus, Hamish, Cahill, Ewan, Craig.

I have 2 of the above!

pinklavenders · 17/05/2022 18:05

The meaning of the verb 'to hector' isn't so nice, unfortunately. Also the nickname Heck?!

I much prefer Magnus.

Zemw · 17/05/2022 18:02

Like them both but Magnus wins it for me.

Coldenough4snow · 17/05/2022 17:57

A pp says that he was nice in the Iliad. But he came to such a violent and terribly sad end.

it is very popular in Italy.

WindyGlowers · 17/05/2022 17:52

I love Magnus, I also really like Douglas.

momtoboys · 17/05/2022 17:35

I love Magnus and Hamish.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/05/2022 17:20

I love Hector ( and I've tucked it away for A Future Cat) , I think of Hector's House ( ancient)

DC2 would've been Victor if she'd been a boy
Love Ralph and Fergus

WildCherryBlossom · 17/05/2022 17:13

I love Hector and Magnus (particularly Magnus). Other suggestions Sholto or Fergus.

DancingUnderTheLights · 17/05/2022 14:27

I don't see them as pretentious and think both are nice. I think of Hector as a Spanish name but maybe that's just my experience. I really like Magnus.

Loginmystery · 17/05/2022 09:16

I absolutely love hector

@toastofthetown Mixed reactions really. Lots of positive reactions but some people seem really surprised by his name. This happened more so when he was 0-3 years - midwife/HVs and at baby groups. Maybe it's more popular of late, as people don't seem to bat an eyelid now, and there is another Hector in his one-form-entry primary school. We're not posh and we live in Zone 3, not very trendy/nor wealthy part of SE London. He really likes his name and I've not once had any regrets. I see it as more of an international name as opposed to posh.
Go for it! We need more Hectors :)

lunar1 · 16/05/2022 19:21

I really like Magnus, not so much Hector but I don't know why.

FrodisCapering · 16/05/2022 19:18

@toastofthetown my Hector is 3.5.
People tend to think the name is cute. It really suits him too. We sometimes call him Heccie, and I call him Hector Smoosh!

I have an 8 year old Hector (Hector Felix) and the other two contenders for him were Magnus and Edgar, so we have similar taste!

@Sumstre out of curiosity, what's the reaction to the name Hector, and does he like his name so far? Hector is our front runner for a boy's name and just wondered.

Hector comes from the Greek, meaning to "hold fast". It's a lovely name, and the character in the Iliad was a nice man too.

SmiledWtherisingsun · 15/05/2022 15:58

Hamish?
