How would you pronounce the name Zaria?

Is it obvious that it's supposed to be pronounced zar-ree-ah?

Thanks in advance

Oh by that I mean the way it tends to be pronounced in England here. So not Zariyah but the other way if that makes sense.

ourflagmeansdeath · 29/03/2023 17:56

I would rhyme it with Maria.

Orcubed · 29/03/2023 10:39

I know a Zariah and she says it to rhyme with Josiah. Za ry ah

Otherwise if I saw Zaria I’d say Zah ree uh but wonder if it was Za ree uh

KirstenBlest · 29/03/2023 10:24

Maria, isn't an arabic/urdu name. I know a Maria who is British-Pakistani and she says her name as Mar-ee-a

KirstenBlest · 29/03/2023 10:22

@Pigriver , it's not an arabic/urdu name.

Pigriver · 28/03/2023 19:13

I think the confusion comes along with the different pronunciations of Maria. In English it is like the Marie in Ann-Marie where as in Arabic/Urdu it's MAR-eea.

I'd pronounce Zahria to rhyme with the the Arabic/Urdu type of Maria.

HappyAsASandboy · 16/05/2022 09:55

I would say zar - REE - ah as my first guess. If someone corrected me to ZAR - ria then I'd remember that and find it a sensible pronunciation.

babyjellyfish · 16/05/2022 09:32

ZAH-ree-ah.

notreadyforthisgelatinousbooty · 15/05/2022 23:32

I would pronounce it to rhyme with Aria/Daria.

Talipesmum · 15/05/2022 23:27

I’d go ZAAH-ri-ah on first guess

to rhyme with Aria and Daria
but not to rhyme with Maria (pronounced in any of the usual ways)

But if I was told I was wrong and asked to pronounce it differently, I would of course. My assumptions aren’t strongly held.

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 15/05/2022 23:14

Id go ZAH-ree-ah

Snowiscold · 15/05/2022 23:06

You need to show where the stress goes. That’s what makes the main difference. Is it ZAH-ree-ah or Zah-REE-ah? ZAH-rye-ah or Zah-RYE-ah? ZA-ree-ah? Etc

Zilla1 · 15/05/2022 22:14

does it rhyme with caiomhe?

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 15/05/2022 21:59

Rhymes with barrier.

SemperIdem · 15/05/2022 21:49

I’d assume it was pronounced to rhyme with Daria rather than Maria. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 13:27

The arabic name rhymes with Maria (Mar-ee-a/Zar-ee-a)

RosesAndHellebores · 15/05/2022 13:15

But how should Maria be pronounced. Like in the Sound of Music or as my English teacher pronounced it in the 70s. Maraya. Like a police man's black Maria.

TrashyPanda · 15/05/2022 13:13

Sorry - Zara ree ah

TrashyPanda · 15/05/2022 13:12

Zaaa tee ah

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 13:10

Zarya

romdowa · 15/05/2022 12:57

Zah - ree - ah is how I would say it

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/05/2022 11:40

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 15/05/2022 10:55

Aria is ahhhh-ria

It's aa-ree-ah.

ineedsun · 15/05/2022 10:57

Za (short a as in cat) ri (as in rhianna) a (er)

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 15/05/2022 10:55

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/05/2022 10:43

Like Maria, Aria, etc. I'd be happy to be corrected but my initial pronunciation would be Zah Ree Ah

Aria is ahhhh-ria

Justkeeppedaling · 15/05/2022 10:55

Za-rye-a. Like Maria (Mar-eye-a)
