Help I can't decide!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

edie but short for Eden or edith

then ada

effie nice but sounds like short for something

girljulian · 15/05/2022 16:30

Effie is horrendous.

Ada and Edie are both cute, but very common, if that bothers you. I do think they both match a bit too well with Etta, too. If you shouted “Etta” and then “Ada” down the stairs, they’d sound the same if your future teen has headphones in.

ineedsun · 15/05/2022 16:27

Effie is from Hunger Games

duckie3 · 15/05/2022 16:27

Effie is gorgeous !

zafferana · 15/05/2022 16:24

I'd go for Ada or Edith, nn Edie.

Effie is awful - makes me think of effalump.

I don't hate any of them but personally, with Etta I'd keep looking. All of them are just too matchy in one way or another.

I think we often like similar-sounding names to those of our existing children because a) we just gravitate towards certain sounds, and b) they DO remind us of our kids and obviously that creates positive feeling. I know I'm running into this with naming any (currently imaginary) DC2 - I feel like I'd need to strike 80% of my list because they're just so similar! It's tough.

Totally agree, so many names I like are way too similar to my son's name to ever be used for a sibling.

Ada

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2022 15:53

Definitely not Effie.

With an Etta already, of the two I'd choose Edie. Ada is nice, but the 'a' ending makes it just a bit too similar to Etta.

Theoldwoman · 15/05/2022 15:52

Ada.

Or Millicent.

MN'ers constant moaning of Nickname names is getting boring now.

Now of those names seem like nicknames to me OP, they have become established names in recent years. I like all of them, but my favourite is probably Effie.

User6761 · 15/05/2022 15:44

I like Ada/Adah

Edie and Effie sound like nicknames to me, but they are fine if the given name is Edith and Euphemia.

pinklavenders · 15/05/2022 15:14

Ed or Edie sounds like it's short for Edward

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 15/05/2022 15:12

I love Effie! Also really like Ada. I'm not hugely keen on Edie though.

octoberfarm · 15/05/2022 13:45

Ada by a really long way, it's beautiful! Then Edie, if it was short for Eden, which is also lovely!

RuthW · 15/05/2022 13:45

Ada. I think it's the only proper name and not s shortening.

astoundedgoat · 15/05/2022 13:43

In theory I love all three.

Etta and Ada maybe sound too alike though?

I prefer Edith to Edie. What about Phoebe? Has the sound you seem drawn to.

Effie to my ears is an orphaned servant girl in the big house who will succumb to consumption within the year. :)

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 15/05/2022 13:39

Ada reminds me of Ada Lovelace, who was pretty amazing. Effie sounds too close to effing.

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 13:36

I don't like any of them

Edie sounds like it's short for Edith,
Ada is a bit too plain
Effie is awful

merryhouse · 15/05/2022 12:18

Well if your other daughter's name starts with E then I would definitely go for Ada.

Flavourflava · 15/05/2022 11:26

@Shlaaaablaaadooo The MN faves aren't ones I'd ever use so being polite I would say they are 'classic' names 🙂

IsadoraQuagmire · 15/05/2022 11:11

I don't like Effie much, even when it's short for something e.g. Euphemia. I like Edie (when it's short for Edith) Ada is lovely (I like Ida even more)

LiveByTheRiver · 15/05/2022 11:11

They're all nice names

MissPocket · 15/05/2022 11:08

My favourite is Ada.
