I love this name but only know it from the book The Wilding and well, now I associate it with that character I feel very weird about using it (don’t want to spoil the story) so I tried to ignore it.

Have seen it mentioned again a few times here and I wonder what others think. What associations do you have with the name?

I met one, she pronounced it Ta-Mar. I loved the name, she said she was bullied at school as people called her Tamarto. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Literally every name will get called something 😂

I dream of a bridge on the Tamar,
It opens us up to the East,
And the English, they live in our houses,
The Spanish, they fish in our seas

I like it written down but when I say it, the name doesn't sound 'natural' with my accent. Might not be an issue for anyone else though haha.

BiscuitLover3678 · 12/05/2022 17:41

It’s also definitely a girl’s name

@TakeMe2Insanity , date is Tamr in arabic, and Tamar is a musllim boy's name

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/05/2022 20:08

Tamar for a boy means date palm in Arabic. The female form would be Tamara.

Shmithecat2 · 11/05/2022 19:53

I've canoed down it.

Pamlar · 11/05/2022 19:52

It means palm tree in hebrew (as well as being the name of the biblical Tamars -there are 2 diff Bible stories featuring Tamar, both are upsetting)
Dd's lovely BFF is a Tamar but is always called Tammy.
I would consider: Tamsin, Tasmin , Tamra or Tamara

TheGratefulBread · 11/05/2022 10:49

The pronunciation of the Jewish/Biblical name is tah-mar

HewasH2O · 10/05/2022 19:38

Mingling snap. Tend to go via Launceston though.

Normally do too! But you still cross the Tamar if you go via the A30

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 10/05/2022 20:49

Gorgeous. It was on my list. I know it's the river but I also associate it with the Bible, so it's been used as a girl's name for a very long time.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 10/05/2022 20:44

I know one, pronounced Tay-mar. Despite being a life long Christian I didn't know the biblical link, although I do know it's a river/bridge.

I think it's beautiful. As is the Tamar I know.

Ive never seen the wilding and assumed a boys name, its quite nice for a boy.

It’s a girl’s name and in the book she has an incestuous relationship with her brother! I’m glad there are other associations.

Tay-mar

FayCarew · 10/05/2022 19:42

Lovely. Suggested it to a christian friend when pregnant, but the reply was 'Like the bridge?'

HewasH2O · 10/05/2022 19:38

Mingling snap. Tend to go via Launceston though.

MinglingFlamingo · 09/05/2022 23:25

Tamar bridge
Tamar River

And that I've been in the car for an hour or I'll be home in an hour

Chaoslatte · 09/05/2022 23:23

To me it’s a river rather than a people name, pronounced Tay-mar.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 09/05/2022 22:40

There's a very famous Georgian Queen called Tamar, and hence the name is quite popular in Georgia. But there it's pronounced TAM-ar not Taymar.

The only one I know is Georgian, and she pronounces her name like that. So that is my main Association with the name. I don’t think the river/bridge would be a problem unless you live south of Bristol.

Firebird83 · 09/05/2022 22:46

Is it ta-MAR, or TAY-mar, or something else?

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/05/2022 22:45

I know a female Tamar pronounced Tay-mar.
It's a good name, stronger than Tamara I think.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/05/2022 22:42

I’ve never come across this name before. Is it male, female or unisex? And how would it be pronounced?

queenofmay · 09/05/2022 22:42

**should say Queen Tamar of Georgia

queenofmay · 09/05/2022 22:41

I think it's beautiful. I would pronounce it exactly like Tamara but without the final A. I think of the Bible (which is possibly not the best reference, depending on your thoughts on the story of Tamar and Judah)... but also Queen Tamar of Tamar, who was a very interesting and powerful historical figure.
