Opinions on axel please ?
I suggested it to oh (expecting an instant no but he loves it )
I have 3 dds all with unusualish names .

I really like it!
I like all the 'Alex' names and this seems a nice interesting twist, though I know it's unrelated to Alex.

Not keen on the Axl spelling as it's a bit contrived/pop starry/oral sex related.

I've got an Axl, always loved the name and ever since I was young (and obsessed with GnR) I said if I ever had a son he'd be named Axl.

Never had a negative comment on the name (although I appreciate most people would keep that to themselves anyway)

It is getting more popular so may date badly along with all the Archers, Arlo's, Archies etc. But I do think it's a nice strong name making a nice change from the "ie" ending boys names that are everywhere and strangley most of the children from the many baby groups my son goes to seem to remember and say the name really well so it's helped him make a lot of little friends.

Hi ! Sorry to jump on a thread but we are considering naming our boy Axl too. Regardless of gnr which we love to, it's just a lot nicer spelling to Axel. Although got absolutely crucified here when raised a thread about that name 🤣

Quite a popular name here (Norway), a famius and successful alpine skiier too! But it is spelt differently, Aksel. And the pronunciation is slightly different, more if an Aak-sell. I love it and wanted it, but DD was DD and not DS.

Nice try (native speaker here). There is indeed an unrelated homonym but that would be "achsel". Really strange association.

Wiki says this for etymology:
Axel arose via Axelen from Absalon (prince of peace), possibly by conflation with the existing name Askel, Askil, medieval forms of the Old Norse name Ásketill, from ans "god" and ketill "cauldron/helmet".[2]

OP it sounds perfectly fine to me.

I taught an Axyl about 7 years ago. He was a lovely boy and the name suited him. It’s not a name I’d choose to be honest but I depends on you really.

Another German speaker here and yes it's German for arm pit so it would be a no for me. But if you have no connective to Germany and like the name of go for it. It's easy to pronounce and spell which is a bonus.

I don't love Axel, though it's certainly rising quickly in the rankings. Not sure how important unusual is to you, but at 168 and rising quickly is something I'd want to be aware of if popularity is a concern.

Love it. Potentially biased...

Ours is a few years older than the Little Mix baby though. DH mentioned it in passing while I was pregnant and I was like oh it's cool and then we just went from there. I did have a bit of a wobble worrying about the reaction of other people but he really suits the name and no-one has been rude enough to comment on the name to us anyway.

Sorry, I hate it!

German speaker here (albeit non-native), in my mind it's pronounced "UHKH-s[shwa]l".

And, yes, it is German for "Axis" as in "Axis Powers".

Too many connotations!
