If you know a Pearl

If you know a Pearl, does it get shortened or lengthened to anything?

I like it and it's the current front-runner after much vetoing by my DH, but wonder if it would become Pearly which I'm not a fan of. I also wonder if a one syllable name sounds incomplete.

@showmethegin I wouldn't let it being your nieces mn put you off. I don't even know the middle names of most of my nieces/ nephews.

Love the name Pearl, I have an aunt in her late 70s called Pearl. Don't think is is shortened by anyone

Hortensiateapot · 18/05/2022 07:08

The one I know lives in the West Country and is pronounced a bit like per-rul in that accent which puts me off a bit.

blameitonthecaffeine · 18/05/2022 07:03

I only know one. Occasionally but rarely Pearly.

It's hard to predict with short names though. In general, I find many people just have an inability to leave a name, any name, alone. With 1 syllable names, I know a Hopie, Faithy, Joycie, Janie, Gracie. And with 2 syllable names a Bels, Em, Ems, Ames, Saz, Loz, Han.

So not sure parents can win!

That's MN for you. I often wonder if MNers actually use the suggestions and tell everyone that their DD is "called Lulu, it's arabic for Pearl" or whatever misinformation they picked up

Gees, calm down!

I know of one 8 year old Pearl. She occasionally gets Pearly and Pearly Whirly off family. But generally people stick with Pearl

CakesOfVersailles · 17/05/2022 13:06

For them I mean, not necessarily for every Pearl. But they never have Pearl lengthened or shortened, either go by Pearl or Margaret.

CakesOfVersailles · 17/05/2022 13:04

The only Pearls I know are really called Margaret. So Pearl is the nickname.

HeadNorth · 17/05/2022 13:01

I had a colleague called Pearl - it was never shortened. She was an absolute bitch - but she had a lovely name Grin

BlondeEgg · 17/05/2022 12:41

Watching videos of people squeezing pearls out of shells and realising that pearls are essentially oyster pimples has put me off this once favourite name.

In Scotland Pearl is a traditional nickname for Margaret (which means “pearl”)

I have a cousin Pearl who was given the name due to our grandmother being Margaret.

She's known by the family as 2 completely unrelated nicknames (which would be very outing so I won't say what they are) but everyone outside the family call her Pearl.

I only think of Pearl in Last of the Summer Wine. Battleaxe 🤣

Maireas · 15/05/2022 12:53

You're right, Kirsten, my husband speaks Arabic and has just said that as well!

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 12:51

@Maireas , it's not even the arabic for a pearl

Maireas · 15/05/2022 08:49

Khalas · 11/05/2022 03:58

Lulu is the Arabic name for Pearl, might this be a contender?

It's really nothing like Pearl though is it?
Quite a different vibe.

Maireas · 15/05/2022 08:48

It's popular, but not overused.
The girls I teach called Pearl seem not to get it shortened, but one gets called Pearly.

showmethegin · 15/05/2022 08:46

I LOVE Pearl, I think it's beautiful. Cool but classic and not overused. It would be on our list (currently 35 weeks) but it is my nieces middle name.

veronicagoldberg · 15/05/2022 08:44

My friend Pearl gets Peeps.

DurdleSnore · 15/05/2022 08:36

I know a 5 year old Pearl that gets Pearly.

KatherineJaneway · 13/05/2022 18:59

I knew a Pearl, name was never shortened or nicknamed.

SleeplessWB · 13/05/2022 18:59

I loved this name but the way my DH pronounced it was terrible so had to abandon it!

whiskyjarsafilling · 13/05/2022 18:58

I love the name.

applesandpears33 · 13/05/2022 18:56

In some Scottish accents it can sound like Peril!

CherryRipe1 · 13/05/2022 18:53

Lovely name. I knew 2 Pearls. One didn't get called Pearly but the other did & her last name was Shine!
