What connotations spring to mind? (apart from Moses' sister of course)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The first name I think of is Miriam Rivera. That's a sad tale tbh.

A kind Jewish woman in her 70s who has beautifully smooth skin, is 5'0 and an amazing cook.

That's very specific! Good to know that people think it's a name that also ages well :)

Agree Margoyles. It’s not a great association. I’m not a fan, I know we’re supposed to think she’s a national treasure but I just find her to be a rude slob.

HopBamPop · 09/05/2022 16:28

To me it's a Jewish name. Very pretty.

Some really lovely people I have known/know
The Bible Character
A person who probably has either a Jewish or a Christian background

Mrs Maisel here too!

AliceMcK · 09/05/2022 16:19

Reminds me of my 10yo DDs classmate and Miriam from the new Disney movie Turning Red. I think it’s a lovely name.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 09/05/2022 16:07

I really like it, it's elegant and unfussy and works at all ages, and I like the nickname Mim. In terms of associations, I would assume she was Jewish, but not be hugely shocked if she wasn't.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 09/05/2022 15:55

Beautiful, elegant, possibly slightly ethereal. Such a lovely name. Also love Maryam (and Sylvie which has the same feel). Have never met anyone with either name, just how I imagine them.

  1. Moses (sorry, but it is overwhelming) 2) Margolyes 3) Lots of mostly Jewish girls and women I know

It wasn't that I minded the association with the Exodus story - Miriam in the Old Testament is an epic character :) just that I thought this association was obvious, so was wondering what other connotations it had for people

Mrs Maisel but I love it!

Elspethelf · 09/05/2022 13:40

There’s something about Miriam, but I just listened to the podcast telling this story. I would not have had the thought otherwise. If the nickname is Mim, I think of Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone, which would be a fun pet name imo!

it’s a lovely name!

SirenSays · 09/05/2022 13:35

Love Mrs Maisel but still when I hear the name Miriam I still cant help but think of that interview Miriam Margoyles gave about 'creaming her knickers' over a guy 🤢🤭

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 09/05/2022 13:30

My mum, my great aunt and my great-grandma. Lovely family associations.

One of my oldest friends! She is clever, beautiful and fiercely loyal Smile

I wonder if we have the same Miriam??!

SirChenjins · 09/05/2022 13:26

Mrs Maisel (I try not to think of Margolyes - dislike the woman intensely).

It's my new favourite name and if I was having DD now she'd be called that Smile

DockOTheBay · 09/05/2022 13:26

AnnaSW1 · 09/05/2022 07:24

I think of Miriam Margolyes

Same
I had no idea it was anything to do with Moses

Quirkycarrot · 09/05/2022 13:25

I knew two- one a devout Christian and the other a devout Jew.

The Muslim version is usually 'Maryam' but sometimes (mis)pronounced so it sounds more like 'Miriam'.

An older Jewish lady

Neverreturntoathread · 09/05/2022 12:43

Made me think of Islam.

It’s a nice name.

I think the Muslim version is Maryam, isn't it?

A kind but firm headmistress coming up to retirement

RoseLunarPink · 09/05/2022 12:58

Margolyes, but also (separately) a prim, tweedy, yet also slightly bonkers woman riding a bike with a basket on the front full of shopping. Not sure where I get this from but she's quite clearly formed in my mind!

Its' a name my mum loves, wanted to call me (but my dad din't agree) and then put pressure on me to use it for my DD, but I've never been keen. It's even more prim than my actual name, which I find unsuitably prim.

However, I do like the nn Mimi.

nearlyspringyay · 09/05/2022 12:43

I really like it.
