Family strongly dislike baby name

Im 30 weeks pregnant with my seccond, its a boy again, which my family made it very ovious they wanted a girl and was disapointed when i revealed its a boy.

After weeks and weeks of discussing names with my partner we finally settled on Reggie a couple of weeks ago, kept it to ourselves untill we knew it would stick and now its stuck we have been telling family.

Very few family actually like the name and my family have been very strongly against it. Saying its a drug gang name, i cant name my child that. Then going on to suggest other names. I firmly tell them no Reggie is what we have settled on and that will be his name. To which i get the response you will change your mind when you see him so what about this name.

Its really upsetting me and im due to go to a siblings birthday party tomorow and i really dont want to go as i know the topic of names will be brought up.

@LittleFilly 6 weeks on and my mum said yesterday she's beginning to get used to the name Reggie now. We're sticking to the name Reggie. Lots of our friends and work colleagues have all said Reggie is a lovely name

Congratulations on your imminent little boy.

However hard it feels, please ignore the naysayers and stick with the name you love. There will always be someone who doesn't like your choice. What matters is what you think.

We had a couple of snide comments about our son's name after his birth ("what a mouthful"). And we kept being asked what we planned to shorten our daughter's name to (er, we didn't!). All these comments came from family or pseudo-family.

People can be incredibly rude and thoughtless. All the more so when they're related to you or think they have the right to their strident opinion. They really don't.

It's particularly unkind and inappropriate to be fending off criticism about something as personal as a name choice when you're pregnant, tired, full of hormones and feeling more vulnerable than usual.

You may find that your friends react rather differently to your family. Which is a good reminder that names come and go in fashion. What was wildly inappropriate when Auntie Beryl was in primary school may now be considered a handsome choice.

Please lose no more sleep over their unkind, petty comments. If you and your partner happen upon a name you love more, by all means, change tack. But otherwise, just enjoy these final weeks of pregnancy and your little Reggie when he arrives.

I'm sure he'll be so scrumptious that, ultimately, no-one will give two hoots what he's called.

You should follow your Heart and choose the name you want. Reggie is a cute name, and you have no reason to be ashamed of it.
Did i make a mistake, if i have the sensation that your family involve too much in your personal life?
To be honest when i read that they were disapointed that you wouldn't have a girl, i was shocked.
We don't choose the baby identity, and it's not to the family to tell if it's great or not.
It's crazy that your family is disapointed, while to have a girl or a boy is not a "choice", but it's simply not us that decide the sex of the baby
I understand how you could feel about the name: My own mom dislike names that aren't common, while me i like names that are original.

So take your individuality and don't let them put limitations in your life. Show who you really are and not how they try to condition you. Good luck, and really don't let them decide for you, it's your life, your baby.

You should name your child Reggie. There is nothing wrong with that name at all. Someone seems a bit hysterical and narrow-minded. You are the mother and you can't live your life how your family wants you to live it, otherwise you'll have regrets.

Like any name its going to get mixed reviews but my familys reaction has really upset me

Yes your family are insensitive

Starbeach · 07/05/2022 08:59

We've picked a name haven't told anyone yet but my mum always ask so I humour her and go through name lists and add in the name we've picked so I know she doesn't like it, but, who cares it your child.

If I'm honest it's not in the top 10 names I probably would have picked but we went through fertility treatment through covid and the OH was treated so horribly I thought why not l let him pick the name as long as it wasn't completely horrendous.

BIL picked an out there name for his baby and everyone commented when he was born now no one bats an eyelid.

Stick to your guns Reggie is a lovely name anyway 😊

Sorry but i agree. Reggie is an awful name... I imagine a badly behaved child with a shaven head....

Exactly... YOU imagine! So screw what the baby's parents imagine, it's what YOU think that counts? Also, imagination isn't reality. J/S.

I opened this 100% expecting a really stupid, awful name.

Reggie is a great name, unless you have another son called Ronnie. Ignore your family. It's a lovely name for a child and will grow well with him as an adult.

Spotthedog91 · 07/05/2022 06:42

@woody87 same!weve had nothing but compliments on our little Reg. I'd love to know the names of the people slating it.. Bet we hate them.

Someone out there will always hate your baby name... Unfortunately some people are rude enough to actually say so 🙄🙄 x

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 07/05/2022 06:30

My family disliked both my kids' names. I had 'suggestions' from them which they ramped up when they visited me in hospital. My mum now denies hating my daughter's name and I think as it really suits her, people now just accept it. We waited over 2 weeks to name her in case we were making a mistake.

When I had my son, my dad had a bizarre rant about how much he hated the name, based on it being the same as someone on tv the whole family decided they hated. We didn't have a clue what they were on about so went ahead anyway. We were much more adamant this time that we were sticking to our guns on names.

My DP's family also hate the names and said we were setting the kids up to be bullied all their lives. This hurt me more as they were very snidey about it.

OP, stick to your plans and don't let them change your mind. It's not their decision to make.

Ikeptgoing · 07/05/2022 05:52

It's your baby and DP's is what I typed before phone auto incorrect got to it! Sorry about typo

Ikeptgoing · 07/05/2022 05:51

It's your baby you and DO call him what you want

Your family are being rude unless you invited their honest opinions on the name you were considering

Your family are ridiculous if they think you have any control over whether you have another boy or a girl?! Healthy baby is most important and usually that's what caring grandparents say

It's not my place to say but Reggie is an unusual name. It's cute.
I wonder if you have a longer name for "the bank manager/ work" for when he is older? My son is known as X but his full name is longer. He uses it for work now he is grown. We all liked the short version of his name and everyone even at school called him that, but all his certificates are in his full name.

Anyway I like the name. Don't see what your family's issue is? It's hardly like you're planning to call him "Moon" or "Earth" or something too out there.

Bathroom2022 · 07/05/2022 05:39

Just to let you know that reggie means weed to us. Not sure if that's regional or just old skool.

Birdie746 · 07/05/2022 05:33

Reggie. I see their point.

Autienotnaughtie · 07/05/2022 04:27

Hate the whole one of each thing! I wouldn't 100% settle on a name until seeing baby so I would just smile say yes maybe. Then call your baby reggie if you want when they were born.

When we were discussing names one name we loved is quite a cute name think Archie, Alfie, Millie, etc at time people were still saying children with these names will look silly as adults. Won't get taken seriously on job applications etc pil were two of these people obviously we just smiled and chose the name anyway. Fast forward five years later sil and bil are naming their first child most babying name ever! Think like Daisy boo or Millie moo. Pil never said a word. 😂😂

calmlakes · 07/05/2022 01:44

I would think the same as your family but I would work harder to keep my mouth shut.
Because naming your dc is something for parents to do.

And what fool would call a doberman Rory? A red setter surely.

No no no. Rory is quite obviously a lion's name.

AprilMae · 06/05/2022 23:40

Reggie is a lovely name

Bunce1 · 06/05/2022 23:38

Gary is sounding better by the minute. It’s due a comeback.

Reggie is not a hipster child name. “Arty” types like
River
Cassius
Kit
Acer
Red

Just a small sampling.

Reggie lives next door to
Paige
Amber
Lacey
Ronnie
Gary

StageRage · 06/05/2022 20:58

As far as I know Reggie is currently favoured by arty / creative / hipstery types.

I like it.

I really disagree with this. Hipster names are much more outside or at least ahead of a trend. I don't dislike the name Reggie, but I have found those that like it also love Ronnie, Jaxon, Roman and other non traditional names that are currently already very popular and in the top 50. You'd have to have chosen Ronnie or Reggie many years before Mrs Hinch for it to be considered alternative.

woody87 · 06/05/2022 23:25

My DS2 (2) is Reggie 😍 Obviously I think it is a fabulous name. Majority of people I know comment on it and say it's a great name, I've had the odd look of course but honestly OP tell them where to go.
