Worth doing the Starbucks test!

I know there used to be something about going to Starbucks and giving your prospective baby’s name so that it got called out when your drink was ready and you could gauge reaction.

I’ve tried it a few times at various places recently with a name that mumsnet posters were quite rude about but in the real world people spontaneously said oh wow you have a lovely name and young people seemed to be really positive about it Also despite what people on mumsnet said nobody had any issue with spelling it or pronouncing it. I think it’s worth doing.

in our case it’s meant we are now 100% happy with our choice of - Xanthe !

Why would a coffee shop employee being from abroad mean that you shouldn't trust their opinion?Confused

I namechanged just to post this. Xanthe is my name. Don't name your child that. I've wanted to change my name as long as I can remember but it's too much a part of my identity now.

It may not sound like a big deal, but having to spell out your name, multiple times, to anyone you speak to, in real life or over the phone, gets tiring and frustrating. The constant mispronunciations I get are frustrating at best.

I guess it depends where you live. It's become quite a common name where I am and I would be familiar with how to spell that name if someone said it to me.

I also have a name and a surname that's easily mispronounced and misspelt - never bother me...it's a talking point.

Well my Xanthe (age 21) is happy with her name. Although when she wants an easy life she uses her middle name that's more common.

I guess a super common name can be a problem - there'll be several of them waiting for their drink!

Judging from the daily dramas at the Starbucks in the lobby of my office building, the most problematic name in an American Starbucks is Caitlyn. At least Xanthe will know which drink is hers! And also it’s a great name.

I'm not sure the (often from abroad) employees at a coffee shop are necessarily good judges of names I like...

It's lovely!!
