Micah pronounced me-kah

cookiecrumble2022 · 01/05/2022 14:42

Myself and my husband have really been struggling with a boys name!

I'm due in about 5 weeks and we don't know what we're having (we already have a boy )

I am really loving the name Micah and when I read it I pronounce it 'me kah'

It has been the only name I haven't changed my mind about liking, the only thing making me question it is the way I want to spell & pronounce it

I know it can be pronounced mike-ah but I'm not keen on the pronunciation

I know I can technically pronounce it how I want , but has anyone heard of Micah pronounced Me -Kah

I've seen other spelling but I really like this spelling of it

Thank you

She likes the spelling Micah but wants to pronounce it Meekah. its not hard to understand.

Of course it is.
because that’s not how Micah is pronounced
so it doesn’t make any sense

Of course it’s hard to understand - because it’s illiterate and ignorant. Just the same as saying your child is spelled Nigel but pronounced Norris.

It is hard to understand because Meekah is spelled Mika, and Mykah is spelled Micah. So we don't understand why you'd do that. No one will know how to say it until corrected and even then some will persist in saying it wrong (I say this as I have a name with a few variations and I still get called the variations even by people who have known me for years!).

I don’t think there’s very much variation at all. The PPs are fairly conclusive that Micah = Mike-ah. There is no alternative pronunciation.

I think it’s clear that you do not, in fact, like the name Micah. You do, however, like Mika. I think you need to choose to either like the way the name looks OR like the way it sounds OR choose another name 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s Mike- ah. There’s a book in the Bible called this. It’s a very well established pronunciation.

please don’t give your child a name you are not prepared to pronounce. It’ll be a life long pain in the arse for him.

Dont be so bloody patronising. Where did she say shes not prepared to pronounce it?

Micah - is always Mike-Ah.
as is Mica. Which is the name of a group of minerals. Think of Formica.

of you want Mee-kah, then go for a different spelling. Otherwise it’s like saying George, but spelling it Peter.

Hardly

bridgetreilly · 02/05/2022 13:35

@BakeOffRewatch but the OP isn’t asking about the pronunciation of Mika or Mikha. She’s asking about Micah which is a different name from a different culture and language.

Dilbertian · 02/05/2022 13:30

Me ka is a perfectly valid pronunciation of Micah. Just not in English.

Micah is a Hebrew prophet name, pronounced Me cha (with the guttural ch as in loch) or Me ka.

BakeOffRewatch · 02/05/2022 12:57

Also I have never heard the My-kah pronunciation. That’s not to say it isn’t a name, just wanted to add my experience to others. I’m surprised others haven’t heard it as Mee-kah though as the mid-noughties pop star Mika, Lebanese born, short for Michael, pronounced it that way.

BakeOffRewatch · 02/05/2022 12:51

“Me-Kah” Mikha, short for Mikhail. Arabic pronunciation has a “kha” rather than “kah” sound, it’s a Russian name too and the stress on “me” is more “muh” in Russian I think.

There is quite a bit of variation on this thread to be fair to the OP.

I have only ever known/said it as My-cuh.

I think of Mee-cuh as a girls name but that's because the only one I've ever known (Mika) was female.

TheGratefulBread · 02/05/2022 09:09

Actually, now I've thought about it, it's more my-kuh. Although I guess it's pretty much the same thing!

TheGratefulBread · 02/05/2022 09:06

Hebrew speaker here. It's mike-ah.

The relevant letter in the Hebrew form מִיכָה‎ would never make an "ee" sound.

queenofmay · 02/05/2022 00:24

I've always heard Micah pronounced Mike-uh in English (though in other languages like French, I suspect it would be pronounced mee-ka).

I would pronounce Mika as mee-ka. Mika reminds me of the male singer of that name who was popular about 10 years ago.

MinglingFlamingo · 01/05/2022 23:34

I know a My-ka and a Mee-ka.

I prefer mee-ka to My-ka as it reminds me of Formica kitchen worktops.

Starseeking · 01/05/2022 22:11

My DS's nursery friend is Micah, pronounced Mike-ah.

Alwayshoovering · 01/05/2022 21:55

I've only seen the name written down and always assumed it's pronounced me-kah

Dirtystreetpie · 01/05/2022 21:38

There is a Mika in my sons class at school, she is Japanese, beautiful name.

The one I know is a girl...

WaterloggedSugar · 01/05/2022 21:24

I'm really surprised by these responses. I know 5 Micahs and they're all 'mee-kah'.

OP, I don’t know if you’re a football fan, but in case you’re not aware a chap called Micah Richards is a very high-profile TV pundit, and probably the best known Micah in the country. He pronounces his name My-kuh.

He pronounces it My-Ka

MsChatterbox · 01/05/2022 21:19

My son is Mike-ah but nearly every medical professional has pronounced it Meekah

FIZZYTEDDY · 01/05/2022 21:18

Micah = Mike-ah
Mika or Mica = Meek-ah

Please oh please just name them the way you want it said...you and your child will forever spend the rest of their lives saying "it's Micah but pronounced "Meek-ah"

It's a lovely name btw! One of my favs! Said both ways! Smile
