Micah pronounced me-kah

Myself and my husband have really been struggling with a boys name!

I'm due in about 5 weeks and we don't know what we're having (we already have a boy )

I am really loving the name Micah and when I read it I pronounce it 'me kah'

It has been the only name I haven't changed my mind about liking, the only thing making me question it is the way I want to spell & pronounce it

I know it can be pronounced mike-ah but I'm not keen on the pronunciation

I know I can technically pronounce it how I want , but has anyone heard of Micah pronounced Me -Kah

I've seen other spelling but I really like this spelling of it

Thank you

Of course you can tell someone they are wrong!

shreddednips · 04/05/2022 19:56

What about Tina? ;)

It's the 'h' on the end that makes the 'i' a long 'igh' instead of 'ee' (I'm pretty sure, anyway 😆). Tina has no 'h' so the 'i' is 'ee'. If it was spelled Tinah, I would pronounce it to rhyme with Dinah.

Mica Paris is pronounced “Meesha” though

😁

@stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou , of course you can tell someone how to spell a name.

If someone suggested they wanted to use a 'unique' spelling of a popular name, many replies would say spell it the usual way. e.g. Leighoh/Leeo/Lio instead off Leo

But you can't just downright tell her she's wrong.

Incidentally, lots of people have to spell their name. Really not an issue

I have never heard of another pronunciation than Mike-ah. There is the female singer Mica Paris, pronounced the way you want, or the male singer Mika? I think your child would have a lifetime of being called Mike-ah and having to correct people.

Mica Paris is pronounced “Meesha” though

Micah compares with Dinah, another biblical name

Dinah is pronounced Die-na not Dee-na

What about Tina? ;)

Also, I would argue it's far more ignorant to tell another person what they can call their child.

If you actually think that, I’m not sure why you’re on this forum.

You can have an opinion on a name. What you can't do is tell them how to spell it!

KittyWithoutAName · 04/05/2022 15:07

Of course it’s hard to understand - because it’s illiterate and ignorant. Just the same as saying your child is spelled Nigel but pronounced Norris.

No, it's not the same. The "I" in English, can be pronounced with a long EE or an eye sound. So Micah, although not using an ee sound, could be pronounced that way, just from looking. Similarly, Mika, which uses the eye sound, could well use the EE sound, you don't know just from looking!!

Whereas Norris and Nigel? Are clearly not pronounced the same and never ever could be mistaken for having the same sounds. Norris doesn't have a g in it etc.

I know a Micah and it's definitely My-Kah. Sounds better then meeka anyway. Think of the meerkat jokes!

KittyWithoutAName · 04/05/2022 15:01

Mike is pronounced like Mike... That probably why you read "Mika" as Mika.

Micah "looks" softer, with the H and the C, hence you wanting to use a softer pronunciation mee-ka.

But yes, Mye-ka is what most people will say.

PedantScorner · 04/05/2022 14:58

And no, I’m not a pendant

Neither am I, duck

Mykittensmittens · 04/05/2022 13:59

Hello. its what you put on the end that changes the pronunciation of the middle vowel, in English anyway. The confusion happens when you are also hearing derivatives in other languages which may make pronunciation different.

But, for the sake of the argument, I’ll assume we are talking about it in the English sense.

The spelling MIKA and the spelling MIKE, for example, change the pronunciation of the I due to the E. E makes the I sound change from ‘ee’ to ‘eye’

AH on the end (C or K irrelevant) works similarly. Therefore Mikah or Micah is pronounced in the English language as MY-CAH. It simply can’t be ME-CAH the language rules don’t work that way.

And no, I’m not a pendant, but I sent the thread to my DM who is a retired English Language lecturer and lifelong studier of the English language and that’s how she explained it to me. And then went on and on explaining about how the CK rather than C or K makes another different pronunciation too….

If however you are basing the naming on another language, the rules of course are different.

Moonshine160 · 04/05/2022 12:57

I’ve always pronounced this as “mee-kah”

Cakeandcoffee93 · 04/05/2022 10:48

I’m a girl and my dad named me Myka pronounced like Micah. I like having a unique name but did get the odd Meeka

worriedatthistime · 04/05/2022 10:46

I pronounced mekah as im sure there was a footballer with that pronunciation

shreddednips · 04/05/2022 08:27

I'd say it My-kah, like the prophet. I think both Micah and Mika are very nice names. But if you want Mee-kah, I would use the established spelling. I think most people seeing the spelling 'Mika' would automatically read it as you want it pronounced and it will save your child having to correct people all the time.

She likes the spelling Micah but wants to pronounce it Meekah. its not hard to understand.

Of course I understand. She says she likes the name Micah but she actually doesn’t because she doesn’t like the way it sounds. She does like the ( different) name Mika.
she could of course throw together any combination of letters and assign whatever sound to it she likes but her child will undoubtedly spend their life explaining the spelling and/or pronunciation of their name.

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2022 19:53

It's not like saying your child is spelled Nigel but pronounced Norris.
It's like saying your child is called Nigel but pronounced Niggle, or that Darcie is pronounced Darchy

You could move to a Welsh-speaking part of Wales and the Mee-ka pronunciation for Micah would work, although you'ld probably get people saying Mike-ah or Mey-k

FWIW, names like Caleb, Jacob annd Daniel get pronounced differently in Welsh (Cal-ebb not Kay-leb, Jack-ob not Jay-Kub, and Dan-yell not Dan-yull)

You#re being deliberately obtuse.

I know two Alicias. one is Aleesha, one is Aleesia. (sounded out like). This is not the same as Hannah and Amy, is it?

Also, I would argue it's far more ignorant to tell another person what they can call their child.

fruitbrewhaha · 03/05/2022 13:49

As a total aside to the pronunciation, I don't like it as a name.

Marvellousmadness · 03/05/2022 13:44

Prepare for a life time of people mispronouncing your kid's name...
